Angry My tranny is locked/jammed, I can't shift it out of gear. Help please!

My 91 dodge spirit only has 40xxxx mi on it, and i came home after work today, and i couldnt shift it into park. (auto trans) Its so weird, it is completely jammed, i can't move the shifter. Please give me some pointers as what it might be o i can try to fix it tomorrow. I have lots of car experience, but I have never dealt with trannies before. Thanks!

Re: My tranny is locked/jammed, I can't shift it out of gear. Help please!

You mean you can't shift out of park or in park? If you are out of park, can you move it to other gears?

On an auto trans, park mechanism and other gears, are 2 different mechanism.

Park mechanism involve a mechanical cable connected directly to the park mechanism of the trans. Many things cause the park to stay locked. I may gave you more info on that later. It's very complicated.

Other gear change (R,N,D,3,2,1) involve another cable connected to a "transmission range sensor" (TRS). It's a switch that control the transmission electronically. Novaday, since 1988, alsmost all trans are electronically controlled. If this trans sensor is rusty, the shifter selector may be very hard to move. So gave more details on your problem.

A Windstar without having the check engine light is not a real Windstar.

its probibly your shifter interlock thats stuck or jammed, its usually part of the shifter itself, sometimes accessible when you remove the handle, if its electrical try disconnection the battery turning the key on and pulling it out of park, then put it in neutral and it should start,
