1996 Tacoma 4wd 6cyl - starter
Hey guys,
I'm considering replacing my starter. Get a click and it doesn't turn sometimes. Has anyone replaced one before? Thanks. |

"Get a click and it doesn't turn sometimes"
Check the frequently asked questions at the heading of this forum, that problem is covered in the faq. You may be able to replace some contacts and repair the problem. That seems to be a common problem. Clifton |

Re: 1996 Tacoma 4wd 6cyl - starter
If the starter turns over fine when it does work, it probably just needs a plunger. Very cheap and readily available at the auto parts stores. You will need to pull the starter out to replace it though. I did mine on my 95 2.7 last year. It's an easy fix.
If you think it may be just the plunger, I would get it replaced ASAP. When mine went it started acting up the same as yours is and I just kept putting off the repair. Eventually the plunger in the starter began to stick when I started the truck and the starter would not turn off - even if I turned the ignition off. Listening to your engine run with the starter engaged for 30-60 seconds is like listening to your bones break. Don't turn a $4 fix into $800 for a new flywheel and starter. |
