big three wires, u replace them with bigger guage ones.
Battery ground to chassis, Battery ground to engine block, Battery positive to alternator.

Re: Is there any reason to buy a cap?

O.K. FUCK what everyone says I owned a 1990 Buick Century and had over 2k watts of just amp in the trunk until I flipped it and I NEVER destroyed a alternator or battery. When I flipped my BLUick I took the entire system out of it and installed it into a 1988 S10 Blazer and still haven't destroyed the alternator nor the battery, now for the sad part about this is the battery that's in the Blazer is the same one that came out of the Century. So what I have to say is FUCK A CAP AND FUCK A HI CAPACITY ALTERNATOR!!!! IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT guess what TOUGH SHIT!!!!!

Lol, you lost your wagon too? Lol. Yours went out in a lot more style. than mine. Stupid rear axle had to come off. She's gone to the junkyard almost 6 months ago. How'd you flip yours?

hahahahahahaha
and if your alternator couldn't handle the 2000watts what then?
tough shit you wasted all that money on that system and can't use it GREAT IDEA why didn't i think of that before i started this thread!

how about go buy a hi capacity alternator maybe thats smarter

You ARE aware that different vehicles come with different alternators, right? Some can take it stock, some can't. Please shut the hell up now.

This thread needs locked and forgotten.

Re: Is there any reason to buy a cap?

High output alternators typically have lower output than the stock one at idle. You might have to play with pulley sizes to work it out. If youhave less than like 1200 watts RMS amp power, you shouldn't really even consider doing an alternator upgrade unless you're headlights are doing the disco blinking. Caps can help stabilize the voltage when listening to music, they don't do much when playing bass tones.

Re: Is there any reason to buy a cap?

The thing is, people get confused in the real purpose of a cap. It is not used to cure or prevent dimming lights nor will it change the way the system sounds (both are misconceptions).

To undertsand the purpose you need to understand how they work.

A cap does it's best to keep the voltage at a certain level, but if the voltage changes so will the cap voltage. The cap just makes the change smoother. The dimming light syndrome isn't a voltage issue but rather a current (amperage) drop. The voltage simply follows what the current does. A cap cannot help this situation at all. A cap doesn't provide more power nor does it try to correct it.

Though a cap is perfect for a noisy voltage line. This is why caps are used in AC to DC power supplies as they are used to smooth out the DC ripple for a more smooth DC output.

The ONLY cure for dimming lights is a more hefty amperage source, the alternator.

The REAL powerplant of the car is the alternator. The ONLY purpose of the battery is to start the car and run the accessories with the engine off, nothing else.

Oh, and by the way, the amp has all the capacitance it needs built in...

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

1. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis.

2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery

3. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.box.net/shared/uchv4dbk88

You will need Microsoft Excel. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g

A second (or multiple) battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off or you have a very high powered system.

The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.
