Turbo the Stock V6 2.5L 24-Valve Avenger
OK, because I feel it necessary that the stock V6 2.5L 24-valve engine deserves some boost, ive decided that i am going to save up for a custom stage 1 turbo kit. The turbo will be exporting around 5 - 7 psi boost, which should be more than enough to get the output power to 200HP, as I have already put in a cold air intake to the wheelwell, and am ordering a new muffler and free flow cat converter for it.
However, the hardest part to come by is the flippin' turbo manifold, and probably downpipe. Has anyone seen a good turbo manifold and downpipe around the web for a Dodge Avenger 2.5L V6 (1997 to be even more specific)? If so, I will definately collect the items, take pictures of my progress, and make a good how-to for all of those who own a V6 avenger. Another thought, because this is going to be a stage 1 kit, I shouldn't need an intercooler, and if I do, it would be a rather small one. Blowoff valve would be nice, to keep the backforce off the turbine wheel, and a good tranny oil cooler, since all the V6's have autos. Not to mention, keeping the turbo at around 6 psi would be good on the engine, AND the tranny, as its an auto. But boosting a V6 2.5L to around 220HP would give the HP that the car really deserved, instead of a wimpy 163HP... boost controller, probably a manual, would keep the boost down, but if the user wishes higher boost after adding a few other parts, could allow for future upgrading. turbo would be internally wastegated, and small, to keep turbo lag to a minimum, new ECU would be needed, since it wouldnt calculate the new boost right, and maybe larger fuel injectors if needed. so if anyone knows where i could get a turbo exhaust manifold and downpipe, i would greatly appreciate it!

Re: Turbo the Stock V6 2.5L 24-Valve Avenger
The 2.5l is a Mitsubishi engine and has the same block and heads as the Mitsu 3.0l engines of the same year. There is a website (with associated shop) that specializes in removing the 2.5l and replacing it with a 3.0l in the Avengers and Sebrings. It is far less complicated than turboing and retains all of the factory computer and diagnostics. The 3.0l puts out about 210hp. They have done some 3.5l upgrades also.
If you still want to turbo your 2.5l, I would assume that the Mitsu 3.0l turbo setup would work for it. You probably need to buy a whole donor car from the junkyard (wrecked, but running) and move the parts over. You will need a piggyback controller to go with that. The piggyback controller allows the engine controller to run the engine as it normally would. The piggyback controller "hides" the turbo from the engine controller and then adds fuel and takes away spark timing to compensate for the Turbo. |

Re: Turbo the Stock V6 2.5L 24-Valve Avenger
someone correct me if im wrong but i believe the tranmission is rated at 250hp so additional transmission cooling should not be necessary

Re: Turbo the Stock V6 2.5L 24-Valve Avenger
it looks as if im going to have to find turbo manifolds and downpipes for the v6 3.0L, if anyone has these and wants to make an offer, im all ears.

a/f ration alteration (re-mapped ECU or piggyback ECU) larger injectors possibly more powerful fuel pump new injector lines (if applicable) turbo (probably a simple T04E, T3/T4, or TD04-9b, depends on manifold) turbo manifold (im in process of designing/creating one I need a TIG welder!) 02 bung sensor holes in right locations gaskets custom dump/downpipe custom chargepipe w/ possible BOV emplacement custom wastegate location (if applicable) tranny oil cooler turbo oil lines intercooler/piping (if applicable) high stall converter (if you want a long-lasting transmission!) boost guage cone/foam filter fuel pressure regulator turbo timer exhaust piping/U-bent pipes (if your doing custom-work, best route) TIG welder (again, if custom-work) the list can go on if you want a quality turbo setup. i hope to God that your going to read this and realize that the 6G73 isn't much worth in turbocharging, unless you really have money to blow, and you have time on your hands. Once you get all this setup, your going to probably run at 12psi max before intercooling is needed, and internals start to wear/break down. Push any farther without proper internal work and your engine will die a horrible death. It's usually the piston rings that go first in the occasions that I've seen. Then its connecting rods, hehehe... if you want an engine thats worth putting money into, go with the better 6G72 found in 3000GT/Stealth cars, or swap in a nice VG30ET/DET, if you can. Better yet, if you can fit a classic Z engine in there, better go with an RB25DET, re-built before swap, with custom drivetrain, differentials, etc., then you'll have yourself a sleeper 'venger. Good luck.

Mods/Replacements so far: custom cold air intake custom cherry bomb turbo II exhaust breather filter BOSCH spark plugs Mods in the next month: free-flow cat converter piggyback ECU predator downpipe remove resonator(s) spark plug wires Plans: -take complete dimensions of engine bay, and engine -diagram out using 3D layout software (Maya 8 or HAMMER editor) -investigate drivetrain architecture and various differentials -research possible engine swaps ive already seen others swap out for the 6G72 and the 420A, but i became interested in swapping out for a more potentialized engine. i've always have a fascination of Nissan sportscar engines, therefore I may look into emplacing an RB or VG type engine into the bay of the 97 avenger!
