Re: external trans fluid cooler
Tranny coolers are a good thing. High trans temps are death to a tranny. Don't fall for a sales gimmick, though. Chances are they will sell you one for 10 times the price you need.
The cooling lines for your 4L65E go from the tranny through the radiator and back to the tranny. If you tow alot (meaning more than 1000 miles a year and over 3000 lbs) get a cooler rated for 7000-10,000 lbs GVW and install it after the radiator. If you don't tow alot and do mostly around-town soccer commuting, install it before the radiator. To figure cost of installation, go to www.summitracing.com and find the tranny cooler's price. Then figure 3-4 hours worth of labor to install it plus $50 for additional parts, fittings, and hardware. GM did a wonderful job of making competent transmissions. Then the bean-counters (who have no %^$*# clue how to make a decent car) decided that customers want soft, cushy shifts. The goal was to make the cushiest vehicle they could to satisfy the old people while balancing that with making 94% of their failures happen after the warranty period expires. Can you tell I used to work for the big three?
