Transmission Repair
I've recently found a 1998 Ford Contour SE for sale that Im interested in. Among a few other problems, it has a cracked tranny case. The seller said its right behind the drain plug. I've heard you can repair tranny cracks with JB weld but how long would that last? Or would it be better just to weld it, and how long would a good weld last?

Re: Transmission Repair
I wouldn't tangle with it unless you want to buy a big potential headache. Sellers will say anything to unload a car. Have it checked by a certified technician then make your decision once he gives you the estimated repairs.

Re: Transmission Repair
The CD4E is about 8 hours to R&R with the V6, more like 10 hours with the 4 cyl. Welding cast aluminum is a terrible idea. Too much tech to go into here, but just skip it.
If its simply a leak, patch the crap out of it and keep adding fluid. But, chances are if it has over 90k on it, its going to need a major (and not cheap) overhaul on it very soon. I do quote about 8 CD4E and AX4N/S trannys a week at my tranny shop. If it starts slipping in and out of gear, jerking, or not going into OD, count on $1600 minimum.

Re: Transmission Repair
TRANSMISSION KING AUSTIN aluminum brazed my case on my 2002 Ford f350. It cost me $200, I pulled it out of the truck.
If your close to Austin look them up www.transmissionkingatx.com, if not they have several locations on the locations page. |
