Anyone have any experience with John Stuart Mill?
I have a final on Utilitarianism tomorrow...
Need a paragraph on all nine... Any real philosophy majors here? 1. What is the Greatest Happiness Principle and on what theory of life is it founded? 2. How does Mill defend Utilitarianism against the claim that it is a “doctrine worthy of swine”? 3. What is the main reason, according to Mill, that as a rule, we would not choose any amount of lower pleasures over higher pleasures? What explanation does he give to explain why people do sometimes choose lower over higher pleasures? 4. What is the principle and standard of morality in Utilitarianism, and how does Mill think we can promote the ideal of that standard at a public level? 5. How does Mill answer to the objection regarding the “coldness of the theory”? 6. How does Mill answer to the objection that Utilitarianism should tell us what our duties are and that the theory does not place a high enough value on virtue? 7. How does Mill respond to the objection that there is not enough time to do the calculating that the theory requires? 8. What are the internal and external sanctions for the theory of Utilitarianism, according to Mill? What is the ultimate sanction? 9. What is the ultimate sanction for the theory of Utilitarianism? Thanks in advance.
