Ok, I'm passing a car in third gear. At 60 mph, I shift to fourth, but it pops back out. So, I put it back into 4th but the tranny catches 2nd.
And the sad thing is, my engine doesn't take it over the red-line and blows. I changed the engine. That's settled, right? Wrong!! Class 2 engine goes in (low mileage). I'm passing again. The exact same thing happens and I swear I put it in 4th. Only the engine doesn't blow. Now it doesn't do it all the time (it's only done it twice). I'm aware of it now, so I make sure I nail her in when I'm going! So, what happened? Why 2nd? (Nissan Stanza 1990)

It sounds like your shift linkage is worn or out of adjustment. I'm assuming that second and fourth gear are next to each other on the pattern. The fact that it popped out of gear tells me that the linkage didn't allow it to be securely in the gear that you selected. When you tried to go into fourth, the linkage was so sloppy, the position said fourth but the linkage allowed you to go into second. When you changed the engine, you only fixed the result of the problem, not the problem itself. You may be able to adjust the linkage, but I suspect that if your car has high miles, you probably will be better off replacing some of the wearing parts - bushings, etc. The problem could be in the transmission but this is less likely. You should start with the linkage.

Well, I wouldnt say just the linkage. Nissan's with the Sr20DE motor and trans have the problem with the 5th gear popout, which sounds just like what you described, but with 4th. If you want more info on it, let me know.
