Installing a Turbocharger in my 2001 9-5 Wagon

I have a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE , 4 cyl Wagon with a blown turbocharger.....white smoke coming out of the exhaust and verified by Saab mechanic. I'm pretty handy and have shop tools, but can I replace this part myself....and is their a site that covers this procedure w/ photos and instruction that I could follow???? I also wonder if buying a used Turbo to save money makes sense. New at dealership $720 vs $375 used.

Mmm, it's a faily big job, have you done any engine work before?

You will also need to flush/change oil twice. So tka einto account he cost of 8 litres of full synth oil.

Good luck.

It's not that difficult. But you will need to get under the car so a car lift is recommended.

Buying a used turbo can be costly in the end, a replacement unit can be a good option though. You will then send in your turbo and get a replacement unit back.

Change oil twice isn't needed. But new oil and filter will be required. Also, drain the coolant before you begin.

If you are worried about metal parts in the sump, remove the sump, clean it and the oil pick up.

Molykote 1000 or similar should be used on the new bolts used to attach the turbo.

Check ebay for reman turbos for 425 plus shipping. Type in saab turbo. I think gaskets are about 200 or so which you will need.
