Revving, not accelerating...

Here's what it's doing this time...new thing every week...if you just give it even a little bit in about any gear (dad did it in 5th last night), the engine revved way up very quickly but the car wasn't accelerating. So...could this be the clutch (although how could it be if it's not engaged); perhaps the flywheel? How about the driveshaft, we all know that's totally gone. Any thoughts are appreciated.

well the same exact thing happened to me and i know just what to do to fix it but you wont like it.....when that happened to me it was because my tranny kicked the bucket and had to put a newly refinished one in for 2200bucks

Any estimates on how much to replace the clutch (labor and all)? I don't think it's the whole transmission, it's only a year and a bit old; although 2nd syncro is gone.

Re: Revving, not accelerating...

If teh clutch wasnt broken in right or the flywheel wasnt machined then it could spell a quick death for a clutch. But as soon as I read the title, the clutch is what came to mind.

Yep, it's the clutch. Just had it looked at at the dealership. So here is a list of what my car needs: clutch, 2nd gear syncro, driveshaft. Lots of other miscellaneous stuff, but those are the main 3. I have $300 in my bank account. I am entirely screwed. This is so bad to say...but I miss the Mustang.

Re: Revving, not accelerating...

You can do the clutch job yourself. Its a bit of work but you can do it. THen you can use that $300 you have to cover the new clutch.

Good thought, but I kicked the car when trying to replace a headlight. I'm not very mechanically inclined.

Re: Revving, not accelerating...

You own a 3S time to learn

When I bought my stealth I did not do anything more than oil changes.

Now 7 years later, I'd rebuild my trans, replaced lifters, fuel pump, turbos,

Re: Revving, not accelerating...

man... I had the same thing happen... it is definitely the clutch... I went to Larry Wester (some guy in Rocky Mount, NC) and he put a new one in $650... $300 for clutch... plus 3 for labor... and he didn't resurface flywheel... 1 week later slipping again... after another $65, I got it back... and it has lasted for about 2 weeks.... and is slipping again... stupid, son of a nun.... he prolly screwed something else up.... btw, when I got the car back the SRS light has stayed on... I talked to the mechanic but he said he doesn't know of anything that he did to cause that... what might cause that.... and on the performance side... I got the SOHC, and no muffler (free-flowing exhaust, straight-pipe)... about how much horsepower did I free up with the exhaust and removing the resonator from the intake...

Re: Re: Revving, not accelerating...

Removing the resonator from the intake doesnt really free up any horsepower, just makes teh car sound better. Freeing up the exhaust probably netted only a few hp. The best place to getr hp out of the exhaust is with a test pipe and 3sx dp. I got the 3sx dp, gutted precats, test pipe and VR4 catback. I lost just a slight amount of low end but the car pulls nice up around 4500 now.

So you paid over $100/hour for labor...no offense, but I would shy away from there, that is RAPE.

That is the supplemental restraint system light...ie. a problem with your airbags. Do a search on here, you might find something, if not, I'm sure I've seen threads on it over on www.3si.org
To do a search on 3si, you need to register, which requires using a real email account, no free email accounts like hotmail/yahoo.
If you can't register, let me know and I'll do a search for you later.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
