the rack?
On a 1993 nissan sentra, can one change only the rack with changing the pinion? Can someone show me a picture of the rack, or describe where its at and how to get it off? Is the rack the same thing as the steering gear? Or is there another name for the rack. I'm told this is what is wrong with the car cause there is a leak underneath and its power steering fluid.

Re: the rack?
You can go to autozone online and it will give you pictures of almost all parts
and also has service manuals to view at the same site for a lot of cars. I have a leak at the output end of the steering gear (pitman arm end ). Seal is similar to a rear seal on the transmission and can be replaced. Autozone shows the part and anything that can be replaced like seals. Jack it up and slide under and take a look for yourself.if ya cant have a youngin jack it up and then take a peek. Information is the only thing that will keep you from getting taken advantage of... Even mechanics wives are whinning for a bigger house. Good Luck |

Re: the rack?
I had a 1992 Sentra that did that. It leaked power steering fluid like crazy, and eventually the rack started going bad. Any time I went over 50, my wheels felt like they were going to come off. My mechanic at the time was willing to install a junkyard rack if I provided it. The rack I was given was a long tube that had an arm on either end of it (I'm not very suspension savy, or I'd give more proper names). I don't know if that answers your question or not......

Re: the rack?
So the rack is just a long thing? Ill check the autozone thing and see what I can find. Is the rack the same thing as the Steering gear? I have a book by haynes on the entire car but it doesn't have anything under the name rack or pinion. It has steering gear but I don't know if thats the same. I haven't ever changed anything having to do with the power steering so I'm learning as to go.

Re: the rack?
RockAuto also has a good online parts catalog.
Take a look at all your linkages under the and they will all come ot a spot where there is one big Nut. You are at the pitman arm. If there is a box with hydraulic lines that is the steering gear. In that box there are an assembly of gears. Things in there are serviceable. Rack and pinion was the original name. One gear was flat and the other ran in the grooves. Steering gear sounds a little cheaper and may be hard to sell than RACK and PINION Good Luck, Dwayne |
