put diesel in my gasoline oldmoble cutlles!!!

i recanly accsidenly put diesel in my oldsmobile cutless, it was almsot empty of gas and i poured like 15 bucks disal in it, i drove for a couple mins and then i started to bog out and that so i stoped, and relized it was diesel, i drained all he diesel and put gas in it, i turned it over for a min and it started up, but it only runs for 5 seconds then turns off, it starts right up but it only runs for 5 seconds, NOTE: THE CAN A DIESEL ALSO WAS VERY DIRTY, so maybe somene got cloged up with dirt, do u think the fuel filter might jut be clogged??? thanks

Re: put diesel in my gasoline oldmoble cutlles!!!

When you say you "drained all the diesel" did you just siphon it out or did you drop the tank, drain it and wash it out?

Unless you dropped the tank, chances are there is still enough dirty diesel in there to prevent the gasoline from burning properly.

So....... drop the tank, drain all the gas/diesel in there, and wash it out with detergent. I like to take an empty tank to the local car wash and use a high-pressure wand on the inside, with soapy water. This will help get rid of any dirt and diesel residue/wax.

Then, rinse the tank thoroughly and allow the tank to dry. Before reintalling, remove the inline fuel filter (if its fuel injection). Disconnect the fuel line up by the engine and blow-out the line with compressed air.

If the car has a carburetor, remove it and rebuild it, and ensure its clean. The residue and wax from diesel will plug-up all the carbs jets.

Then, when the tank is dry, reinstall it. Install a new fuel filter, hook up the fuel line under the hood, add fresh gas and start it up.

Re: put diesel in my gasoline oldmoble cutlles!!!

1) Disconnect the fuel filter, and connect a 4-6' hose in its place.
2) Place the other end of hose in a 5-gal gas can.
3) Disconnect the fuse going to the ignition module, so it doesn't start.
4) Turn the key on, and let the electric fuel pump do it's job.
If this car has a mechanical fuel pump, you need to turn the starter over to pump fuel out.
5) New fuel filter
6) Octane boost
7) Fill her up!

$15 of diesel < 5gal , you might consider to siphon some bad fuel 1st, befor letting the fuel pump do it's job. There will be less of a load on the battery.

How much fuel was in this car, befor the $15 of diesel?

If the diesle was clean, sure draining and diluting it will work. But if the diesel is as dirty as Glen indicates, dropping and cleaning the tank is best. It's really no big deal to do at all.

Re: put diesel in my gasoline oldmoble cutlles!!!

I wouldn't suggest using water to blast it out. The tank has baffles that are designed to retain gas near the pump and sucking in water can be bad for the pump and sender...rust can form quickly. I'd use a solvent instead such as carb cleaner or a bottle of your favorite fuel system cleaner (the exception being a methanol- or ethanol-based cleaners...these can cause rubber parts to swell up in high concentrations and long soak times). It can dissolve any gunk that has formed and help pass it through the pump easier. Plus, any cleaner still left in the system can be burned by the engine or dissolve into the gasoline.

Also, some fuel injection systems will automatically shut the pump off if it doesn't detect the correct fuel pressure or after a certain length of run time with the engine off. I had to drain my truck's tank last summer and had to cycle the key on/off a number of times to keep the pump running.

Hope this helps!
