'88-'90 Mustang 5.0 vs '90-'92 Firebird Formula
Okay, I think I've narrowed my choices down to two different cars. I need your advice on which you think is best. I am going to have around six grand, which has to pay for insurance. Here's what I know about both: the base 5.0 (which is all i can afford) has a small-block 302 with about 220 horsepower and 300 lb. ft. of torque and the Formula has a 305ci small block with 170 HP and 255 lb. ft. of torque or 200-230 HP and 280-300 lb.-ft. of torque in the H.O version (I'll probably be searching for the HO). i don't know 1/4 mile times on either but I don't care, specifics don't matter to me, I just want what is more enjoyable, can beat most the cars in my hometown, and something that I can build up over time, It's also my 1st car, so It will take me a while to master the power anyways. My hometown has both a big GM and Ford shop so parts won't be a problem. Waht do you think I should get. I'm sort of leang toward the 5.0, but you help me decide.

I wouldn't bother looking at a non HO 305 Firebird if you want a fast car. The others are probably about even in terms of speed. With 6k you could move up to a 93+ Firebird or Camaro with an LT1 which is faster than any of these cars with 275hp and 325lb-ft.

Re: '88-'90 Mustang 5.0 vs '90-'92 Firebird Formula
Well, About a month ago I snagged this 1988 Mustang Saleen clone...http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kevinc...db.jpg&.src=ph
...for a cool $2000. It has 150k on the clock but the top end was rebuilt 50k ago and it also came with ported and polished Cobra heads, Upper and lower GT-40 intake, Moroso cold-ait intake, bigger injectors, headers, and Flows. I'm not sure if the headers are stock or if the Flows are a full system. Non the less, the car hauls ass...lol And for $2,000, can't really go wrong. It runs very well. It's a 5-speed. Just to give you an idea of what you could get. Insurance is cheap too. I'm 23 and for the minimum coverage it's $30 a month. |

I could never own a car mentioned in a Vanilla Ice song, so there will be no Rolling in my 5 point O.

Re: '88-'90 Mustang 5.0 vs '90-'92 Firebird Formula
I would definatley go with the 5.0 stang given your choice of years. The mustang had more power and was lighter. The 305 in the f body's just won't do. Also you are going to have much better luck finding a 5 speed mustang than an f body.

When mod fever hits, the 5.0 can go further than a 305 F body. If I hadn't found my 94 Z28, I would have gone for a 5.0. I'm even debating selling my car and going to the blue side because I love the hatchback style GTs body so much.

I've always been more of a Camaro/Firebird fan (especially the Firebird), but for cheap straight-line speed, I think the 5.0 is a better choice.

5.0's are easier to find because they're ugly as hell and nobody wants them. Go with the f-body, they're just as fast and they dont look like a souped up volvo.

I actually love the looks of the fox body 5.0. Its definitely a lot more appealing than some slow ugly ass Pontiac that only grandmother librarians should drive. Plus Ive seen some just sick kick ass looking modified 5.0 around here. Not only that, but the 5.0 can be fast as a mofo, i have one with basically only bolt-ons,fuel system, and forged pitons/rods, (nitrous system coming in 2 weeks yeah baby) and it makes over 350 hp to the wheels. i haven't been to the track since i got my drag radials or 3000rpm stall but last time i went to the track, with no traction (stock tires so...) and a 1500 rpm stall i ran a 13.5 at 113mph. With that mph it should be mid 12's with traction, and even faster with the 3000 rpm stall converter (ive had people say as low as high 11's but i don't know that's just what they say ill find out for sure myself when i go to the track next time. a high 11 time slip would be awesome though). And that was also before i installed the cia. god i love nitrous turbo/blower can suck my ass (no offence to turbo or blower owners) |

my car will be running great long after your car's engine dies, and I only spent $4k on it,, including the price of the car. There's also some "sick kick ass" grand ams, i've seen supercharged ga's raping modified stang gt's at the track,, kinda hurts since grand ams are one of the slower pontiacs yet with a little money can kill ford's highly-acclaimed "muscle car". "What about the cobra??" well for half the price you can get a stock WS6 that will run circles around it. Sorry if i'm a little anti-Ford, but I like my cars to be able to run after 100,000 miles. I also havnt met anyone besides 16 year old hics that rice out 5.sl0ws. So in 10 years while you're still driving that same sorry excuse for a car i'll be cruising in an '02 trans am you cum-guzzler. anyone that doesnt agree with me can suck my ass.
