1976 chevy malibu classic
Hello anyone,
I'm looking to restore an old chevy malibu classic, however, the previous owner switched carburetors. (removed the original stock quadrajet 4barrel) I'm having trouble getting any advice/help from local carburetor shops. (when they hear "emissions" they quickly end the conversation. I'm not trying to do anything illegal, just find an OEM carburetor that I can use to get it road worthy and smog legal. Any help would be appreciated. Here's an old photo of my old Malibu before I sold it. I bought it back a few years ago, but the damage was done, and now I have a lot of work to do again. thanks |

Re: 1976 chevy malibu classic
So you are looking for proper Quad Jet, Google rebuilt Quadrajets for a mutlitude of carb shops that specialize in this issue.

Re: 1976 chevy malibu classic
thanks, yes I looked on google and ebay, but am still learning about carburetors. I live in CA and have to conform to their smog standards, (the cutoff year here is 75) I was told that I needed the original (not the exact original) but one that came with that year and model. I'm just not sure if a rebuilt one will be approved. I'm learning that there are some numbers listed on the side of carburetors that show the year and day manufactured? CA requires a visual test for emissions passing as well as a physical test. the smog tech said I needed one with an aneroid bellows, which I think has to do with altitude?
any help is appreciated. |

Re: 1976 chevy malibu classic
Correct the aneroid bellows compensates for altitude. If you have the original model/pn designation and contact the major carb rebuilders I would think you would find one you can use.
