A defective coolant temp sensor would cause the problems you describe. By giving the computer erroneous information, the computer would not run the correct air/fuel ratio for the conditions at the time.

Re: '89 325i loses power after warming up

'Kenr'..........'EDubya's post just made a connesction upstairs.......amazing what I don't think of when the vehicle's not sitting in front of me, anyway, just below the throttle housing and intake boot and in front of the starter you'll find a round black connector named 'C191'. it connects the upper injector and temp. switch harness to the chassis harness and is NOTORIOUS for tapping moisture and corroding the pins and wires ! ! ! !
you can open and inspect the upper part by reaching down between the intake boot, fuse box and brake booster and, holding the lower half firmly, inscrewing the upper half [ 1/4 turn to release] and with a flach light, see if it looks SPOTLESSLY CLEAN. corrosion at this connector WILL cause all sorts of 'mysterious' symptoms and is common to all E30's with DME M1.1 &> and on E34's with M20 engines [ it has a different C# on E34's]. SORRY I didn't think of this sooner.....jeffb.

Very good of you to revisit this problem. It's been running wonderfully for the last few days, 91 gas and the Red Line fuel treatment bimmerman suggested.

I'll check out the temp sensor, I know already it's giving "false checks". The coolant is full and clean, temp. gauge never reaches hot, doesn't boil over, none of the typical "hot" stuff.

I'll get back to you with the results of checking the sensor.

Thanks,

Ken
