'96 T&C LXi (3.8L) 15+- city; 21-23 hwy.
Pretty crappy when you consider my '91 Corvette ZR-1 (400+hp/4:10 rear) gets approx. 15 city and 22-25 hwy, depending how much beyond 80 I'm going. |

Re: What's your MPG??
Back to Noen RTs K&N filter. I've been thinking they aren't cost effective, however, after doing the math (yuck!) I figure it would take around 18 tanks of gas to recover the cost of the filter if the mileage goes up 1 mpg. That's based on:
$2.50/gal 18 gal to fill up Normal filter $10 K&N filter $40 1 mpg increase with K&N filter Figure 4 tanks/month then it would only take 4.5 months to recoupe the extra $30 for the filter. After that it's gravey plus I understand you clean the filter and don't replace it. The gravey keeps adding up. Not too shabby. It all hinges on the 1 mpg increase. Any bets on if that would really happen? OBTW - I'm still getting 18-23 MPG 96GC 3.8 190K miles Neon - Did you see a mileage increase when you made those changes?

Re: What's your MPG??
I check the mileage all the time, it seems like the average is about 1 more mpg than before. The K&N filter was mostly for the fact that the filter is hard to get to and the K&N only needs cleaned once every 50K miles. The exhaust change is because I wanted a nice tone to the boring, whistling, rushing air-sound exhaust system. It now has a nice rumble when I start it and my wife doesn't complain (good thing) about it being too loud when cruising. The most benefit that I noticed is that it has enough more power to be noticeable. The transmission had some shifting issues (abrupt, not quite at the right time) at some throttle settings for a couple of days. It also now revs to 5000 rpm before shifting WOT instead of the 4600 before.

2002 T&C flex fuel. Was getting 22 mpg with regular. Using E85 Ethanal when available getting 21.5 with it but the price is about 50 cents/ gal. cheaper.

Anybody know what the total fuel capacity of say a 91 Caravan's tank? I'd like to get proper consistent results if I calculate the MPG.

Re: What's your MPG??
Ondes, just record your milage at your next fillup and fill your tank all the way after using most of it. Take the new milage and subtract the old, then divide by the amount you filled up by on the pump.
Mine is 0, as it is still sitting in the driveway, waiting for problems to be fixed.

Re: What's your MPG??
Just got back from Florida (1000 miles) with my 90 Caravan 3.0L with 3 speed. I can get 24 MPG at 65 mph. I installed a Tornado and a K&N filter today, so I'll let you know later if it's improved.

Re: What's your MPG??
Well, after testing my Tornado and my K&N filter, I have to say they made no difference at all (22 mpg on the highway, no hills, run all day, no stops, normal tire pressure.)
What I did find out is that I can get 30% better gas mileage if I just follow a big truck (not too closely.) If I follow the truck CLOSE, the difference is almost 50%. Currently I'm getting 30 mpg on my trips to Florida. I just bought new tires that allow 50 psi pressure. I'll let you know what happens there. |
