Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
I have a question that I hope someone can answer: I read somewhere on these forums that the price of the LM was £799,000 new. But what was the original price of the GT? If they limited production of the LM to 5 to celebrate 5 GTR's in LeMans 1995, and sold all of them at that price, and were only going to build 1 GT, but demand meant they built 2, does that mean the GT cost even more than the LM?
Cheers guys! |

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
Hi folks,
Question regarding F1 #018. I read in the "Recap of the Japanese F1 fleet - Take 2" thread (which is fantastic btw) that it was fitted with an LM spec engine. Is this the only other F1, other than Don Wallace's, which was converted to a LM spec engine? Also since Don Wallace has been mentioned already, are the wheels on his F1 bespoke (one of one)? Did OZ manufacture those wheels? Pic of his F1 below. http://www.supercars.net/gallery/119513/1793/750952.jpg Thanks! |

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
I'd say the easy answer to both questions is 'Yes'.
The first question is an 'as far as we know' type 'yes'. There's never been anything credible to say otherwise and all reports that were credible have claimed only these two road cars were converted in such a way. It stands to reason too, as they're the only two road cars with the louvers on the front fenders which have been referred to as the 'Extra High Downforce Kit'. On the second question, there is one photo I have seen of another F1 fitted with the wheels that #073 wears but it was chassis #011 which at that point in its life was owned by the brother of #073's previous owner. My suspicion is that it is the exact same set of wheels, but perhaps more than one set was made. I suppose that OZ was contracted to make them as they're quite similar in style to the wheels worn by the longtail GTRs which were supplied by OZ and the style is one of their classic wheel designs. Edited to add: A short excerpt from Christie's auction description for #073 states: "...along with a set of forged multi-spoke wheels (exclusive to this car)..." >8^) ER Last edited by Peloton25; 07-09-2010 at 12:08 AM. |

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
Thought I'd put this here. You never know if it is indeed 'not a stupid question'....
When going through my GTR library, I noticed that the GTR below had two rings or pipes in its roof air duct. Not sure which # this is, which is why I added the 2nd picture. (Could it be #10R, that did a couple of races with the red livery-base that it has now?) Q: What are these pipes in the airduct for and has anyone seen it on other GTRs? From a very quick initial scan, I haven't seen it on other GTRs. Of course, I don't have near as much GTR pics as others (I think ). But I'm quite interested in why this one had it and what it was for. |

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
I'm 99,9999% sure it's #10R, but Greg and Erik can confirm and I think they has some detail information about this case also.
By the way; do you have information what is the year when these images have been taken? Looks like around 1995-1996 testing? Possible Mangy Cours or Paul Ricard or not?

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
Thanks Kars!
They are more visible on 10R though, I think, or is this just the angle? Also, as I haven't seen them before, I wonder how 'customised' these parts are? Ie. from McLaren, or produced by individual teams? I know, just because I haven't seen them much, doesn't mean they're not there. And how do they restrict? Can the air only go through the 'rings', and is the area around then closed? And why is there a need for restriction? Does this limit the engine and then Sorry for all the questions. Normally I'm just in awe about the external beauty, and not at all interested in the technical stuff, but this one I just couldn't leave alone |

The need for restriction is simply to comply with the regulations of the time.
Performance balancing in a manner of speaking. |

They restrict the volume of air that can get into the engine, reducing horsepower; the smaller the hole the lesser the amount of air, the less power the engine has.

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
I have a question about Mclaren's logo. Back when the F1 was being made the Mclaren logo consisted only of type and the black box around it. In recent years, a logomark was added: the red swoosh (as seen on the MP4 12c's hood). Does anyone know what the swoosh signifies and when they started using it? Thanks!

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thr
The swoosh -logo came around 1997 as the Formula One team switched the sponsor from Marlboro to West and the whole McLaren group changed their appearance. Before that there was a blockier or edgier version of the swoosh, like a red arrow head. You may have seen this version of the logo on the McLaren Formula One cars on those races where it was not allowed to advertise tobacco products. Also many of the Minichamps McLaren Formula One models of those days have that version of the McLaren logo instead of the Marlboro -logo/text.
