This problem is likely caused by the power transistor controlling the blower being shorted. I have repaired several of these units in this way. When shorted, the blower draws its current directly from the battery. Ray

Where do I need to look to find the transistor that needs to be fixed?

The blower controller (transistor thingy) should be in the A/C plenum, in the engine compartment, against the firewall (but in the plenum), just right of center. Two connectors and three 7mm head hex sheet metal screws, and it's in your hand. Common problem.
