96 Random Start

Hi Everyone,

Need some help. Got a 96 Corsica 2.2. The car is starting very random. Most of the time it will start, however from time to time it will just not start. It turns over and will never fire. I can let is sit for a few hours and come back and it may or may not start fine. Once it does start though, it runs fine for a few weeks then it will do it all over again. It never dies when driving.

Here is what I have done:

Fuel Filter - New
Plugs/Wires - 10 Months
Compression - Good
OBD2 - No codes set

Any ideas?

Thanks

When the problem occurs, have helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the plugs, If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the national brand autostores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage, if you don't have one. It don't hurt to ask? Any codes? Maybe intermittent rpm signal, can't tell?

Probably ignition module...they fail over time and you won't get fire. Random then it fails completely. Check for bright blue spark, should jump 3-4" off plug wire. Otherwise could br weak fuel pump, check for 40lb of fuel pressure.

Re: 96 Random Start

Hi Everyone. I have come to find it is a fuel problem. Sometimes the fuel pump will run other times it will not. I am not sure what the issue exactly is. I replaced the relay and still have the same issue.

Last time it would not start, I pulled the fuel pump fuse, waited about 15 seconds and put it back in. Not sure if this was a fluke, or if this is what actually caused it to run.

Any other ideas?

Re: 96 Random Start

You check it when it son't start....

Check for spark, fuel pressure, and injector pulse......
