3D printed 1927 Miller 91, Gould Studio's design
It's been a while since I did some modelling because I've been launching my own prototyping business. Since 3D printing is offering better quality, it is thé technology for model making. I still believe however that those who master the regular skills still have an advantage.
When it comes to modelism, the 3D printing scene could change our hobby as well. Imagine you 'buy' a virtual model (or design one yourself) and get it 3D printed. Nobody is still depending on the big 'T's and other brands. I also believe however that this will still take some years. So, in fact, it's exactly what I did. I bought the model from 'Turbosquid' (and from Gould Studio's) and started reworking it. http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/...1-model/775870 The 3D files are perfect (no holes or missing parts) and I the only thing I had to do is split the chassis into components, ... Here's the first print series. I also have to admit that I needed to run some tests for all the parts. I want to print everything as much in scale as possible. As this will be a 43rd scale model, everything will be very tiny. http://www.depaddock.eu/forum/attach...0&d=1389008708 The goal is to have this model ready in 4 to 5 weeks, but it will be a hell of a job, even if it is 43rd scale. Everything needs to be modified, created, ... and right on scale of course.

I don't see any pictures...but i'm very interested!
I briefly had the MCM Miller 91 kit but it looked rather useless as a starting point so i started ( on a very limited level ) to build 1:43 data for this exact car, because ever since i saw the original at Goodwood i just love it. |

I'm using mainly Envisiontec machines. These parts have been done on the Aureus. The build volume is only 60 x 45 x 100mm (X-Y-Z), but the resolution is mind blowing. In the X-Y plane, it is 43 microns, in the Z-plane, it is between 15 and 50 microns.

Re: 3D printed 1927 Miller 91, Gould Studio's design
So, some more printing has been done.
I divided the chassis into 2 pieces. I'm not quite sure it is the right thing to do, or perhaps not in this way, but I'll see. I'll do a first dry fit and see how it turns out. The bodywork has also been printed. The body has been divided into 3 pieces, that is the front grill, the engine hood and the cockpit. The front grill is a separate piece to make sure it can get chrome painted in a separate stage, the engine hood and bodywork have been separated to gain time during printing. The results look spot on, let's see after a first thin coat of primer. The central wheel nuts have also been printed. I did these in 50 microns and I'll see after sanding how they look. If needed, I'll reprint them in 15 microns to get rid of the layer lines.

I managed to get the pictures in. I just linked them from another website in stead of Flickr.

Please, repost the biggest picture with the size not more than 800x600, because I can't see the thread correctly.

Re: 3D printed 1927 Miller 91, Gould Studio's design
Hi
I really really love this article. I have a question, is it pretty easy to separate all the different elements of the car, from the 3D file from turbosquid ? How Would you 3-D print a windshield from these 3-D files, and make shire it will fit ? I would love to see how you separate the different parts of the car, and work these elements in your CAD software. Are your tires in printed in rubber or resin ? Finally, I would appreciate more Post of the different steps to completion. Which cad software are you using ? This is a very interesting subject of me. This is nice work that you do and I'll be following the future articles. |

Re: 3D printed 1927 Miller 91, Gould Studio's design
I think this stuff is absolutely the future of modelling. When the technology will be available at a competitive price (thinking at Miller´s laws...) will be possible to have everything in the collection.
Great opportunity for all 3d programmers. Keep on postin. too interested, even cause the quality of what u are showing in this pics is totally breathetaking.

Re: 3D printed 1927 Miller 91, Gould Studio's design
Our company is called Tenco Proto and we're located in Belgium.
We don't do online orders like iMaterialise and Shapeways do because we're targeting a different level of customers. High level, high quality ... not always possible if you look at high volumes.
