Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
Hi there,
This is my first post-hope it's in an appropriate place. I was in an accident in May and just got my car back from the auto body shop after repair (minor damage to the driver's side fender). Since I got a pay-out I opted to have the other fender replaced for some rust issues, and had my hood and both front doors blended. Today, my son fell in the driveway so I SET my (leather) purse on the hood for maximum two minutes and two small circles of paint peeled up but didn't fall all the way off. I smoothed them back on for the time being Is this normal? Is this my fault? Does it sound like their might any issues with the paint job? Perhaps something wrong with one of the coats? I got my car back 10 just days ago. I have some other issues I need to go back to the body shop for (my mud flaps are not snug to the car and there is a spot where the paint has been noticeably brushed off (driver's side door) but is obviously clear-coated over b/c it is very smooth to the touch, just a white-ish mark where it was brushed off. Is this worth bringing up as an issue or are they just going to pass it off as my fault? Just FYI, the president of the company has handled the entire process and seems like quite a fair man.....just want to know if i have a case. I have set many (non-abrasive) things on the hood before this paint job and never had a mark. Thanks for any advice in advance. Susie |

Welcome to AF! Sounds like a poor quality paint job to me. It's hard to say without seeing it but I would bring it up to them when you go back.

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
Thanks alot for the reply.
The other thing is, the paint was still "gummy" which makes me think, yes, poor quality and I will definitely be bringing it up. Good thing it happened now and not down the road when it's harder to prove it isn't my fault but the paint job is lousy. Thanks! s |

Welcome to AF. Deffinitly a bad paint job. The paint should indistinguishable from the factory paint on the rest of the car. I had mine done a couple of months ago, and I can't tell where it was painted and blended. Take some pictures of it before you take it back. Hopefully they deal with it professionally, it maybe have been an honest mistake by the painter.

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
The paint job actually looks great (too good to be true!?) and there is no difference from the original and new paint, sorry if I was unclear about that. it is just this one spot on the hood that has peeled off. I smoothed it back on and that's when I realized that it had a gummy, undried feel to it. It makes me wonder what shape it'll be in down the road...
I chose to keep the vehicle and have it repaired b/c it has fairly low mileage still and is running really well. The sole person I dealt with, who is the president of the auto body shop (one of three I had to chose that was approved by my insurance company for repair after the accident) has been really, really nice. So much so that it makes me wonder now if he is going to do a 180 and turn on me! I hope not... I will take some photos. I should have done that when it peeled and before I smoothed it back on. I wasn't thinking-silly thing to do on my part. But it is really obvious that where I have smoothed it back on, it has all these tiny ridges so one could tell it wasn't dry. I just hope he doesn't railroad me. That I can stand my ground! generally I am pretty good with standing up for myself but sometimes it's tough when you're not an expert on what you're dealing with. |

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
There maybe one spot where the prep work wasn't done right, or someone spilled something on it and didn't tell the painter etc, and that is causing the paint to lift.
If it looks great, them chances are it was a simple mistake and they will be happy to fix it Let us know what happens .

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
I like the positive attitude
Come Monday I'll have an appointment to go back in and go over the paint issue plus few other minor details. I'm hoping it will all go smoothly! I will definitely convey the outcome. Thanks for all your help and support! Susie |

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
Welcome to AF, my buddy just had his truck repainted a few weeks back and had the same problem. They didn't give him any grief and had it fixed in a couple days. Let us know how it goes!

Re: Advice: New Paint Job Peeling
They probably used crappy paint or didn't scuff enough and that's why it's pealing
