Question Auto-trans not shifting down @ stop

'91 Metro auto-trans is not shifting down to 1st when @ stop when in drive or second. Must down shift manually to first. Any ideas? I am new to the metro systems. Thanks, Bearwulf

Re: Auto-trans not shifting down @ stop

Your chassis brain is bad. Mine would only act up in hot weather. I got one from a junk yard. It is a small electrical box located under the dash right of the steering wheel shaft.

Thanks again!!! Know where there are a couple of parts cars to check for the brain.

Re: Auto-trans not shifting down @ stop

Hey, did you replace the chassis brain yet? did it work? My car is doing the same thing (i.e. not down shifting to first when stopping some times.)

Please let me know I would really like to get this fixed.

Thanks,
Zechariah

Re: Auto-trans not shifting down @ stop

Could also be a bad shift solenoid, or a bad connection in the wiring going to the shift solenoids.

Could also be the shift cable adjustment on top of the tranny. I know if I gingerly put my shifter in drive, it starts out and stays in 3rd gear. If I put it in Drive with a little force, it runs perfect. The other idea about the automatic transmission control unit is viable as well.

Yea, I had the same issue a couple years back. I replaced both shift solenoids and problem solved.

Yes, I got the brain replaced and did cure the problem on mine. Sorry it took so long to get back, but have been very busy with grandson.

Re: Auto-trans not shifting down @ stop

They're inside the tranny, if you remove the pan, you'll see them.

Okay, thanks. What would I call them when I go to order new ones?
also are they easy to replace?

Thanks,
