I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

I've gotten to 7A-18-3:

But when I look at the illustration, it's not the same setup as mine:

The manual shows the differential gear in the right case:

But mine is in the left case as you can see in the picture above. Was it supposed to remain in the right case? Should I try to remove it?

Also I don't see anything that looks like the gear shift yoke. Is it in this picture of the right case?

Ok figured it out.

If you follow the manual's instructions there's the possibility that the differential gear will stick in the left case. Just have to gently pry it off and all is well.

I've got a bunch of pics and stuff up to this point but I want to get the build complete before I post them.

I'm also trying to find out which rebuild kit will work. On the other forum, a member (Shimaze) still had problems with 2nd gear after he rebuilt it. He had earlier said that the 1st and 2nd synchros in the kit had the same slot size whereas the manual said they were different:

Does anyone here know anything about this?

First - I'm not trying to, or hope inadvertently, be a rectal opening...

Second - the first link is a link to another page on TeamSwift's Forum - it is not a picture file.

Third - the second link is to a picture file (.pic extension).

The giveaway on a picture file is .jpg or .tif or .bmp or .pic or .pcx or .gif or some image extension
somewhere within the link itself.

No worries Doc. If there is any frustration, it's with the lack of participation. I'm sorry if it came out toward you.

I have quite a few pictures I've taken but I'm holding off until I get the rebuild done so it will be coherent. I also need someone who can maybe do some photoshop work. I know we've needed this kind of thread for a long time but it seems the people that know aren't speaking or aren't reading anymore. I'm getting help through pm's though so I'll be able to finish I'm sure.

If you don't have a graphics program to work on those digital photos, you might find
something on Freeware (Free) or Shareware (trial software - pay later) web sites...

I essentially don't have any "disposable income", so I employ a lot of "Freeware" when I can find it.

I saw the same thing when I rebuilt mine. I put it back together anyway, paying particular attention to the lineup of the synchros and the tabs. If you are following the manuel you will see the the notation about this.

I haven't had any problems with shifting yet. Maybe I was lucky.

Hi redneckgeek53,

Maybe it's not luck? The keyway size may be the fix for all we know. 1.4 mm is a bit of a difference there and if you're not having trouble at all then who knows? If it's the fix then surely there must be some documentation for it and it would be nice to see it. I don't think a parts company would just substitute like that without anything to back it up with. It just would be nice to see it or at least hear from someone in the know.

Brief update:

Still working on the trans, gears are all removed from the shafts. I was able to use a bearing puller but I highly recommend that if you can access a shop press by hook, crook or by paying a shop (gasp) that you have the countershaft 2nd & 3rd gears pressed off. I had a fun time with the puller. The other gears / syncrhos came right off so if they charge for each press job you can get away with just that one. And if you are using a gear/bearing puller set, you're probably going to need a 12 carriage bolt because the puller arms in my kit at least were too short. My puller required a 3/8 X 16 bolt. Don't know if that's standard or not though.

My computer is giving me problems and my laptop doesn't have the storage for me to keep and post pics. I will do so as soon as I get the computer fixed. Just figured I'd check in.

Two questions....

For someone who has never even seen the inside of a manual transmission,
(any transmission) please explain why you are having to pull off (remove) any
gears.

And how can you remove gears from a long shaft with a "press" -
can't picture that in my head.

I understood that the bearings,which you are doing the rebuild for, are on the
ends of the shafts.

Do the bearings and races come off easily - slip off ?

Any special tools needed? What tools should I start to buy for this job?

This is why pictures are so helpful.

My manual transmission is becoming quite noisy when I start the engine in cold
weather - on the right side facing the engine from the front of the car.

The noise goes away if I press in the clutch - I suppose one or both of the shafts
stops rotating then.

I am worried that the noisy transmission will one day make a big "Chunk!" sound....
and that will be all she wrote...

What is peculiar is that all the gears change like a slip and slide. My Synchro's
must still be quite good. No shifting problems whatsoever - just noise.
I am supposing one of the shaft bearings is worn and "Chattering".

The Throwout bearing must be still good because the noise is there ONLY when
the clutch pedal is out. The Throwout bearing only engages when the pedal is in and
that is when the noise goes away.

Doc I promise I'll post plenty of pics when the desktop is up and running again. For now I only have the pics I uploaded to photobucket. The reason I'm pulling gears is that I have to get to the brass synchro rings. They are the gold colored "gears" in this pic. Sorry it's the best I have for now but you can see the gold color:

As you can see, they are in the middle which is why I have to remove the gears too. In this case I'm doing the rebuild to replace the synchro rings too and possibly the hub assembly. I have a picture of my bearing separator in photobucket:

There are bearing separator sets on Ebay. I paid like $30 for mine. Here's a pic from Ebay of what it looks like to set up to pull except that the separator is wrong side up. It should be flat side up like in the picture above:

That's pretty much what mine looks like. If you are just replacing the bearings, a standard bearing separator / puller set should work just fine and would be all you need if you were just replacing the bearings. The bearings do come off just fine. So far no other special tools.

I was advised at one of the dealerships that I should not preorder parts before I take the trans apart so that I could inspect things and replace only what's needed. In your case, at this point, you have sort of the same problem my other car has only mine is all weather. When you let the clutch out the input shaft, being where the power from the engine comes into the transmission, rotates with the engine. When you push the clutch in you are separating the power from the engine from the trans, the input shaft (which inputs power from the engine) stops turning and the noise stops too. It's your input shaft bearing or bearings that sound like they're going. Real cheap. Lucky you.

Make sure the fluid is full.

Doc, I want to eventually delete this thread and re-post a whole rebuild thread with pics. Right now there are a couple of hold ups, the biggie being my broken desktop. But I promise, there will be plenty of pictures.

How did you lift the Manual Transmission out of the car's engine compartment ?
I'm 65 and a mountain of hard muscle (lol) so I'm interested in how to do that part w/o
having a hemorrhoid pop.
Pictures of you taking it out/putting it back in would be nice....

If you "pull" the gears off the shaft, you almost REQUIRE pictures so as to get them
back in the correct places - no ?!

BTW - could you use Threaded Rods instead of longer carriage bolts ? Then you could make the puller as long as you wanted it to be....

How do you get the gears back in place ?

If you need such a strong "Puller" - how do you get them back onto the shaft ?

They must fit quite tightly....

If I replace the input shaft bearings, wouldn't I be foolish not to do the synchros
at the same time - plus the clutch, also....
