"New" Version of VW bug... how do I make it less girly?

I've been given a bright red, (new type) VW bug.

I can't sell it, and I don't have much money to spend on it.

Is there anyway I can get it to look less... girly?

Just from your description, only things that come to mind are maybe rims, body kit (if availiable) or maybe some vinyl graphics. It will be much easier with a photo....or two

How much do you have to spend?

on post pics. I know you said you don't have much cash, but i would get a nice dark tint job, slightly bigger than stock tires/rims, and some sport springs that lower it an inch at the most. Then it would look like a somewhat more serious ride (its still a bug after all).

I was thinking that the color was the most important.

See, this is sort of a side project. I leave for Europe in 2 months and don't know if its even worth it.

It get great mileage, but I'm kinda a thrill seeker and speed is... a thrill.

But it's in my hands, for free, and I'm told that I can't sell it as long as I live with my parents (I'm a 21 year old college student).

As for now, I just wait until no one is looking to get into my car.

Honestly, can you pull up for a job interview driving a bright red bug? It's like driving the winnie mobile.

Or an ice cream truck. (which I did for a while)

Its not that bad, there's worse vehicles. It may look girly to you but I bet it still looks good. That bug gets good mileage and I bet its roomy in there.

50 MPG on the highway at 55 is what i estimated.

I literally drived for 2 hours once and thought that the gas gauge was broken becuase it wouldn't go down. Turns out the Bug wasn't using that much gas, or diesel.

What I REALLY liked about the car was when my parents first bought it. (I was about 16), and it had a good sound system in it, and a 6 disc changer in the trunk.

Unfortunately my mother poured sand into the disc changer (literally) and ripped off the radio antenna. I ride around with a tape converter hooked up to a CD player, but I can't stand that background buzzing noise it makes.

Also I almost kill myself everytime I try to change the song.

LMAO!!! I just saw a VW commercial on tv. Guy driving a new bug gets waves from a little girl and an old lady. the kicker...it was a red bug!! ~~sorry.~~ I don't have anything against those vehicles and I must say that if someone gave me a VW I wouldn't be unhappy!! Pimp it out!

I'm reading about the $250 paint job at Macco... apparently you get what you pay for.

As for a "tint job" it wouldn't go good with the red, so I better get it painted first.

As for colors.... I don't know. Black seems too flashy, even if it is less girly. It's sad that I'm considering just making it a cranberry red as opposed to the bright red it is.

I'm on the fence here: either put a bunch of money into making it decently cool, along with saving money overtime. Or just abandon it for a new car when I get back from Europe.

I searched on the internet and apparently the bug sells out in the more "gay" areas of the country (san fran. etc.) and is even considered a girl car in Germany.

You guys on here probablly understand what a car can mean to a person--what it says about them. But to others it seems stupid to worry about this. I think about it like I think about wearing a skirt and makeup around town. The skirt isn't me, but it sends a message.

I've never really invested anything into a car before, I'm interested, but I don't want to blow 2,000 on something stupid.

I don't think dark tint would look bad on a bright red car...I think it looks good! Have you checked out any car sites that show peoples' cars before/after they've "pimped them"? Cardomain.com is an ok one...it's kinda slow on loading though.

ps. as far as girly cars, I agree with sickcallaway...there are more girlish cars. THere are a lot of "stereotypical" cars for certain people. Old people + Cadillacs....etc. But they are only stereotypes. I'm 23 years old and drive a '93 and a '99 chevy lumina LTZ which have been called "granny cars"...especially because they're marroon..but I like them and that's all that matters. As far as worse "girly cars" my picks are: CAVALIER, NEON, SUNFIRE. It doesn't matter what kind of car it is....somewhere out there there is a young person driving one, an old person driving one, and other kinds of people driving one. One of my best friends drives a PINK S10...nobody makes fun oh him and so what if they do...f*** 'em!!

I also think the tint would go good with the red. Frankly, I think a tint job makes ANY car look better. Just gives a more serious look to it. But if you can get a different ride that makes you happier when you get back then by all means wait.

BTW, why the hell did your mother pour sand in the changer? I'd have a hard time not slapping her. Gonna be a little difficult to sell unless you get that fixed.

She can destroy almost anything overtime it's really amazing.

It was a 6 disc changer that was in the trunk, and she was carting around rocks/dirt. And... somehow it was opened, and somehow a large amount of rocks and dirt got into it. It worked for a while than stopped.

All the window up/down buttons are screwed up or missing and she somehow got the antenna ripped off the top of the car. She doesn't know how or when it happened becuase she prefers to drive in complete silence.

One time during a vacation she accidently deleted all the photographs off the camera... must have been like 30 pictures.

I wouldnt spend a dime on it. Just wait for a new car. You never get back what you spend on a car. Plus to even get a factory level paintjob would be over $2,000 at least.

I feel for you.

I would get new rims but nothing fancy, ones that use hub-caps remove the hub-cap paint them dull black with a set of aggresive snow tires, then put badges all over it
