O2 Sensor
Does anyone know how to check if the O2 sensor is working properly? I have a 93.5 G20 with 115,000 miles and notice a rotten egg smell. The catalytic converter is probably bad, but I want to know why it went bad. I have heard that if the O2 sensor is bad, it could cause the fuel mixture to be rich and have the excess fuel burn in the converter.
If anyone can provide some insight, I would appreciate it. Thanks.:smoker: |

If your o2 sensor is out, (and you have two, BTW), your check engine light will come on. I replaced mine on Saturday. Do it yourself. It takes 5 mins but the dealers will charge you for 1.5 hrs.

Now a good question is:
What kind of o2 sensor will you use to replace it? Nissan, bosch, NKG, something else? Prices...good product...etc?

On the 93.5, there is only 1 O2 sensor. I know that 95 and above have a second sensor on the the catalytic converter. boing82 said that 94 have a second sensor as well.
So, if I have only one sensor, will the check engine light still come? It hasn't. If it is not the O2 sensor that is bad and causing my catalytic converter to go bad. Does anyone have any ideas as to what elso could be going bad? A local mechanic wants to charge me $70 to run a diagnostic on the car. I would like to avoid this and hopefully do it myself. Thanks again. |

the excess fuel is supposed to be burned in the catalytic converter, that is the point, to reduce pollution...what u heard is right, when it fails, it can or will make the fuel mixture rich meaning...the air/fuel ratio is lower than 14.7...

Emission testing may not tell you if the sensor is faulty. this is due to the catalyst will remove most of the unburnt fuel. the best way to test is to take it to a nissan dealer to check with consult. or if you are any good with cars, you should have voltage at the sensor connector. live12v/ earth 0v/ and a switch wire. the switch wire should switch between 0 volts to a max of 1.1 volts (atleat 5 times within 10-20 seconds with car running) the lower the voltage the richer the fuel mixture. so 0 volts would be rich and 1.1 volts lean.
hope that helped
