Re: Hummer puddle question

Depends on how fast you, which model, and how it is equipped. Manufacturer specifications say that a stock diesel H1 will go through 30" all day with no problems. A stock gasser will only tolerate 24" for extended periods of time.

With a snorkel, (e.g. http://www.serious4x4.com/snorkel.html) the truck can handle deeper water for short intervals; I have had mine in over 3' of water, with a bow wave halfway up the windshield. This is not a guarantee everyone will have the same success however...

To truly ford for extended periods of time over 30", one would have to perform some additional waterproofing modifications to protect the electronics that are tucked into the doghouse of the vehicle... the interior is water resistant, but not waterproof, so eventually water would make its way in there and fry some electronics.

Some HMMWVs are equipped so that they can actually drive for extended periods of time in 60" of water; that means the driver and roofline of the vehicle are completely submerged. This requires a tall snorkel, tall exhaust pipe, and other components of the deep fording kit to prevent water from getting into vent lines and air intake. The HMMWVs do NOT have the electronically controlled transmission and throttle that most newer civilian trucks have, so it would take a LOT of modification to do the same with a civilian truck.

Re: Hummer puddle question

Don't splash into the water too fast or your engine will ingest all kinds of water and batter it to death in about 1/2 second.
