96 continental transmission leak
Hi,
My 96 Continental is leaking tranny fluid. It only happens when the transmission is really hot. In other words when the car is cold it does not leak. It looks like it is coming from where the tranny meets the engine around the torque converter. Could this be the torque converter seals? Any ideas? Thanks, Steve |

Re: 96 continental transmission leak
What do you mean by "really hot"? Is this just the result of a normal engine warm-up, or are you driving really hard or pulling a trailer?
This should not happen in normal use. However, I have used Ford transmissions hard enough that fluid leaks out of the same location. But this is from driving fast in hilly terrain with a heavy load, and is not due to normal driving. There seems to be a transmission vent in that location, which leaks fluid when the trans gets unusually hot. So, if 'normal' driving does not produce leaks, but they only occur during periods of heavy use, try adding an auxiliary transmission cooler, like the kind recommended for tow vehicles. Get the biggest one that will fit. |

Re: 96 continental transmission leak
thanks for the info. it seems to have stopped, with running it about 1/2 quart low.
