89 toyota 4x4 Automatic Transmission erratic shifting

I have a 1989 Toyota 4x4 Automatic transmission, 22RE EFI. I have recently had the transmission rebuilt, but am still having issues with the transmission shifting erratically. At take off the shifting will go from 1st. to third to overdrive in a matter of seconds. Sometimes it will shift properly, but seems to be a bit sluggish. There are times when in overdrive I will press the accelerator to the floor and it will not downshift to passing gear. I can manually shift and get all gears. It shifts erratically when it is cold or hot. I had a mechanic tell me that the computer was telling the transmission to shift so we replaced the computer and it didn't help. Anyone need a good computer, I now have an extra one for sale.
Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 89 toyota 4x4 Automatic Transmission erratic shifting

Some guessing here, but I wouldn't suspect the ECM, as you found.
I'd think something in the throttlebody/shift solenoids.
The downshift problem may be the throttle (kickdown) cable may not be adjusted properly.
Just a few ideas.

Re: 89 toyota 4x4 Automatic Transmission erratic shifting

Hi Bad6X6, I haven't done anything new to try and fix this problem. I just manually shift the transmission. I'm tired of paying people to fix something that they can't fix. To be honest I have been looking for a Toyota 4X4 with a 5 speed manual transmission. Why Toyota decided to put a automatic transmission in a 4X4 is beyond me.

Thumbs up Re: 89 toyota 4x4 Automatic Transmission erratic shifting

Got mine fixed yesterday. Tech found the TPS sensor was bad. He showed that it is two sensors in one. one for the engine and one to show pedal position to the trans. He replaced an it now shifts better then I have seen in years. He found this after replacing the shift down cable and had the same problem afterwards. Thank You!!!
