A question regarding speakers in general

Ok, first of all Hello everybody, because I'm very new here. Right now I'm a BIG newbie at audio stuff too, so please go easy on me if my question is, well, I don't know, stupid or smth. Also, English isn't my native language.
I wanted to know if a speaker should sound ok if you place it simply on the table at home or hold it in your hand OR if it will sound decent only when properly installed on a rigid support, in the car for example. Man, I hope i ain't gonna get flamed. Thank you.

Re: A question regarding some speakers

depends on the speaker, but usually it needs some type of enclosure (box).

I beg to differ. All speakers will sound poor when used openly minus one which is adire's huge home square sub. When a speaker moves it pushes out sound waves in both the front and rear direction, but they are in opposite phases from each other therefore if a speaker is left in the open you get loads of cancelation and only hear a few notes. Which leaves you with quiter and less fuller sound
