Re: Gordon Murray's fantastic review of the Bugatti Veyron from TopGear...
I've been reading up on the veyron and as much as i disagree with the whole idea of it, i think they did a good job with it. Sure, its kinda ugly, too heavy and the whole quad turbo thing. But from what i've read, it seems like they actually got the thing right. Its a great car but imo the whole top speed thing has kinda ruined it. It seems that that was all it was made for and it obviously was not.
The McLaren however will always own it. Its light, economical, and from what i've heard, easy to use. All cars have their downsides but the McLaren certainly has more to offer than any car ever will. |

Gordon also pointed out a very good point. Top speed was never a priority for McLaren. For Bugatti, it SEEMED this was everything and they just designed a car around this (if that makes any sense).

Too bad no one is designing a McLaren F1 today. But then, maybe GM is... |

Looks like GM made a sensible and good review on the Veyron, he has a tendency to favour his own creations (for obvious reasons), so I'm really surprised it was this objective.
The Veyron is a good car it seems! Last edited by Thorst13; 11-30-2005 at 10:03 AM. |

That was one of the best car reviews I've ever read.
It is concise, accurate and clear. And apart from the fact that you know the man behind the pen (or the keyboard) is none other than Gordon M himself, you can clearly see the article was written first and foremost through experience. His knowledge shines through. Thanks a lot for sharing Erik! |

Nice info given his objectives with the McLaren and the objectives with the Veyron. Interesting that he finds its handling defies its weight considering how heavy a car it is. Some engineers really did overtime on that one.
Wonder what he would have built if top speed was factored into his equation... perhaps the 97 GT in the 1st place with more power? I guess we can only speculate. It is interesting as others have posted that the McLaren is the standard to which all cars seem to be compared.. even after so many years. I'd be silly to think that a piece of technology is going to remain at the top of its class forever. Automotive magazines, will forever be mentioning the McLaren in some form or another when comparing top cars... just like the Miura, Countach, F40, 250 GTO, BB, etc. Now comes the true test... a Veyron GTR.. will there ever be one? Will it be competitive?. Will there be evolutions of it? I'll be putting my 1:43 Veyron next to the many F1's on the shelf. |

That's really interesting, and a good idea. Make the guy who's baby is getting thrown out of the spotlight drive the car that's doing that! He made some very valid points and seems very proud of the vehicles he's worked on, he didn't mention the LCC Rocket though.
