Re: egr valve
The Ford "official" name is the differential pressure feedback (DPFE) sensor for the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
This webpage gives an explanation and diagnostic process: https://itstillruns.com/troubleshoot...e-5444139.html I had problems with my '96 Windstar (3.8l) when the tubes became clogged with carbon. I was able to get them clean with fire and a piece of music wire. |

Re: egr valve
The DPFE is a common failure item on the Windstar. I've replaced the DPFE in my '00 3.8 Windstar twice: The first time I used an OEM-style cast metal DPFE. It failed in short order. I replaced it again with the updated design, which is an injection-molded plastic assembly. The updated one has been working fine for years.
The DPFE seems to be a fussy part. I recommend using a Motorcraft part instead of aftermarket replacements. Hint: rockauto.com carries the Motorcraft DPFE for the Windstar 3.8.

Re: egr valve
Also verify that the vaccum line between the DPFE and the EGR valve is intact.
The EGR valve RARELY fails on the windstar. The other common issue is that the EGR ports in the EGR components listed in this photo 1996 windstar. Yours will be different, but very similar....still have the DPFE, etc https://www.flickr.com/photos/415748...7632198092975/ Clogged egr ports https://www.flickr.com/photos/415748...7632198092975/ The only way to clean the EGR ports is to remove the upper intake manifold and hand clean them. Usually, the ports clog up and only 1 or 2 ports get all the EGR flow....which causes a misfire on that cylinder. At this point with as old as these windstars are getting....it is possible for the metal EGR flow pipe that connect to the exhaust to rust out and leak......
