FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

Here again with one of my trucks. As you probably noted I like old stuff from the 60s and 70s. They were truck I crossed in my childhood cause real workhorses. they all came from a period when the quality of working machines was something superior, and nearly no plastics involved in the critical parts.
this made theme became nearly immortal, and Fiat trucks (before Iveco Genesys) was a leader company on those. they were able to mix Italian engineering to American parts produced under license (as the Hendrickson differentials or eaton fuller gear shifters).

Fiat trucks had a develope after the Chinese six ones (the round cab ones I already show on those pages, fiat 682, and fiat 690), to the squared cab, named as "H cab" from the frontal shape, originally developed in France by Unic, and also used by Magirus Deutz after the group becomes united. Iveco stands for industrial vehicle corporation (today CNH group) and included all those firms.
OM was another local Italian company located in Brescia producing trucks of every kind of weight under fiat license. the main differences were the front logo, radiator, and minor details. They claimed to have a little extra power in the engine (straight 6L no v8's).

SO my model here (thats actually much more forward than a real wip should be..) is once again coming from the italeri plastics of the fiat 190 cowboy and/or magirus-deutz 360. I just need the cabin from those trucks, cause engines, from both boxes cannot be used. cowboy has a v8 unit, while magirus has the lovely 10 cylinders air-cooled unit, typical from the german production.
As for porsches, those heavy trucks always lokks the same, and just a little experience makes u remember all the numbers actually names of the trucks.

the 180 model was the top vehicle for power and performances. this has been an incredible step forward in technology after the chinese 6 serie cause the top speed passed from 55 kmts/hour..to over 140 kmts/hour, in just few years.

here some pictures of the vehicle described here:

this is a fiat 180 still in service in 2019.

so the main work in modificating the italeri 4 sides of the cab is mostly around the upper part of the main windshield. it must be reshaped cause all the roof was lower and the entire roof had a much lover line as well as different drop lines.
It is the same identical work I did for the fiat697 (6x4) but here the diggest difference between those 2 ones will be fro front bumper with lights, so typically different.

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

despite this H cab serie still didnt had the reversable cabin (only the real original frenc Unic trucks had )I wanted to place a straight 6L under the bonnet. so i found the unit coming from a peterbilt truck. No use for the v8 from 190 iveco or the even more particular 10 cyl air cooled from magirus production (this will be used into daf NTT to create an iveco 260 long nose in the future). I started then enlarging the chassis taking costantly the measures for the second steering axle.

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

the main external difference that must be scratchbuild for the 180 is surely the front bumper.
I dont think there is any way to obtain it from the spare one u can have from 190s or turbostar. it is very important to give him the proper shape and thickness. Nearly all in this serie had a very big steel hook on the right side of the front chassis, so not in the front little window.

And one step that stopped me for several months was to find something suitable for the metal corniche the front lights have over the glass. A cool tip was to use the 1/35 PE set from eduard about the Vab . The side windows are perfect for the usage on the 180...

and here another critical point in H cabins early series (low roof). the water line around the front windshield frame

and an overall look.

Love how you are trying to get even the smallest detail correct. Will be waiting to see this finished with a trailer.

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

Thank you Mal, I like old guys like this.
They also went to Oceania and sold under the International truck brand. seems also some of those old Italian fellas are still around in Australia and NZ, and a very sad video was released time ago about an Australian super claw in steel cutting one of those in a terrific way. It was a company demo video to show how well done and powerful are modern hydraulic claws used in scrap yards.
Italian truck lovers are still scrying after such scary video (the victim was a Fiat 300 6x4 truck, a legendary workhorse from the 70s..)

About the trailer, I am doing one right now, meant to be used behind my previous Dutch Fiat 697T from Rynart truck (the rotta Karachi movie documentary fellow). It's a 40 feet container, and the overall measure of the trailer and tractor becames over 70 cmts. They really became huge models. Probably will keep this container not permanently fixed to the trailer, and use also with this 6x2 om 180 tractor. we will see...

Besides, I have scheduled to build up also a platform trailer carrying an 1/24 caterpillar d8H over, as well as a decent trailer for the 1955 Peterbilt 351 from Duel Movie. each of them between 70 to 80 cmts long.... LOL.

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

Then time is up for some painting chapter. no secret I simply love this passage cause i can express my idea of serious and realistic weathering. Its a contrast I always loved. my clean race cars versus those rusty boys..ahah.

so chassis comes first, cab in a second time cause in this scale they always becames as little scenette where you have to search something cool in the "living area" of the driver...and I am planning something cool and different at the same time for this 4th truck I build.

chassis comes first then:

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

My original idea was to paint this truck in the 2 color schema they had in the 70s. usually was a combo of silver/red or blue or cream over blue. here below some examples:

So I tried my way using a sail color and a fiat blue, this was the result

but then I realized the schema was too similar to italia Polizia di stato color..LOL, and I really prefer it to remain a commercial vehicle,

so I repainted the cream part and all become blue. then I started my weathering effect using the salt technique. I like it a lot cause remains very real in this scale

then washing the big grains away the effect becomes as I like..

and the overall look over his chassis..

Re: FIAT/OM 180T truck 6x2 1/24

one of the nicest part for me when I build those old fellas, is to create micro dioramas telling a story inside the cabin of the truck. The drivers don't do an easy life, even more back in time..so why not take a pause, somewhere in Italy, eating some good cheese and fresh bread...and maybe a glass of vino Rosso?
Of course, never drink and drive, but these parts of the vehicle usually became the house of the drivers during the long journeys, ...and he promised me he will take a long sleep somewhere in sunny Puglia before restarting his long trip to the working part of the country...Ha ha..

and here we go:

ok...that was not the most healthy life, some alcol, some cigarettes, pretty ladies magazines... LOL.

The damaged side windows

a pellet on the back of the cab, near the cables for the trailer (air and electricity)
