How to change 2000 Cabrio Headlights

How the heck do you change the headlights for this car? I wanted to change the headlights for my girlfriend so I went to Kragen and bought some 9005 headlights, popped the hood, and was confused. I know for my car (99 civic ex) all there is are 2 rubber grommets which you have to remove, and a metal wire which holds the bulbs in place. I noticed on the cabrio, theres a metal wire, and it seems as if the plastic could come off, but I dont want to break anything. Anyone w/a step by step response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Re: How to change 2000 Cabrio Headlights

Hello Calvatronx, Did anyone ever get back to you about changing the headlights? Both headlights burned out on my 2001 Cabrio and I am wondering if I have to replace the entire unit or can I just replace a bulb! ?? Thanks...GilbertGirl...Gilbert Arizona.

Re: How to change 2000 Cabrio Headlights

this info came to me courtesy of the cabriolet andcabrio club on yahoo.com (THANKS to them)
prior to getting this response, i had gotten as far as taking the black cover off and removing the power cord, but got stuck trying to remove the old bulb.
I havent yet had time to put this to the test

and DO NOT touch the new bulb with your bare fingers!
If you accidently do, clean it with some rubbing
alcohol.

The oils on your hands will cause a hot spot on the
glass, causing it to burn out/break and you'll have to
do it all over again.

Re: How to change 2000 Cabrio Headlights

Hi everyone,

Yes, this does work. I just finished changing both bulbs on my roommate's 2002 Cabrio. I fought with that lame little pin for about 45 mins. before I came in and checked to see if anyone else had any idea how to change the bulb. When I removed the pin, I squeezed it and pushed it down, and then one side came out, then the other. Its kind of hard to describe; I just read how to do it, then I messed with it until I figured it out. But yes, it does work!

Re: How to change 2000 Cabrio Headlights

Hi,

Thank you for the excellent advice, I was able to change my bulb in about 10 minutes on my 2002 Cabrio.

Several clarifications in case it helps anyone. This job does not require any tools. (some other forums I found mentioned using a screwdriver to remove the headlamp assembly...this was not the case for me.) Because you'll need to see pretty well to remove some of these clips, I'd recommend doing this when you have plenty of light to see by.

1) Flip the wire retainer towards the center of the car.
2) Remove the black housing that was held in place by the wire
3) Disconnect the power line connecting to the bulb. It's a straight plug so just pull towards the back of the car and it slips right off.
4) Look carefully at the retaining clip that keeps the headlight in place. The clip is horizontal. On the side closest to the center of the car, push it towards the front of the car to relax the tension between the clip and it's housing. Now, pick either the top or bottom side and get that side "unclipped". It should now be easier to release the other side.
5) Without the retaining clip, the bulb comes right out easily.
6) Because the replacement bulb is halogen, don't touch the bulb with your hands since the oils on you hand can damage the bulb when it heats up. My replacement bulb was slotted so that you have to line up the base of the bulb to fit in properly.

Reverse the steps and you're done. Good luck!
