2005 Grand Am SE - won't shift into Park

Hi all,

Any advice would be very helpful right now. My 2005 Grand Am SE will not go into the "Park" position. What could be the issue? Please advise.

Thanks

Welcome to AF.

Check your fuse first, under hood fuse box.
Then check down by your brake pedal to see if the brake/trans shift interlock(BTSI)/ brake light switch is pluged in and making contact with the pedal when depressed.

If those are ok, then your BTSI could be bad.
Its located in the console by the shifter.

Could also be your park nuetral safty switch out of adjustmet.

Good Luck

All Grand-Ams seem to have this problem, although no recalls have ever been employed.. It is usually the easier of the 3 things that can be the trouble. The hardest thing is removing the console. Don't go there yet.
1) The most common problem is that the shifter handle push button is broken. The shifter handle can be removed by first exposing the bottom part of the handle, by pulling down the leather boot. There is a U pin that can be removed with a small flathead screwdriver. pry behing the pin, and it will come off easily. This is how you can easily check to see if the handle is the culprit. With the handle off, push down on the yellow rod. If the car can now be in to park, you just found the problem. Buy a new handle and replace it, re-install the U pin and your back in business. Handle is $30-40 from dealer, 1/2 price from junk yard.they have lots of these.
2) one of the fuses are blown.
3) Shifter solenoid.
