Dumb question about EGR valve 2002 Silverado
I have a 2002 5.3L Silverado. I'm trying to find the egr valve. In the Hanes repair book it show a picture of a V8 model with a egr valve located near the front passenger section of the egine block. Judgeing from the picture, the egr valve looks like a black canister about half the height of a can of red bull. If I look on my truck this does not appear! but there is a bracket there. If anybody ever changed one and could give me some insight as to where its located at that would help me greatly.

Re: Dumb question about EGR valve 2002 Silverado
If i think i know what your talking about you have to take the VORTEC plactic cover off the top of the engine and it will be staring you right in the face toward the front of the engine ontop of the intake, and also under this subject, should the EGR valve be a little loose, there is a screw that holds it down and it is tight, but i can wiggle the EGR back and forth. Just a thought!

Re: Dumb question about EGR valve 2002 Silverado
I'll take the Vortec cover off again and do some more looking. I've changed EGR valves on older gm trucks (1995) and some Toyota's. I would guess the part would be very similar looking?? The main reason for changing this is to get the check engine light to go off. I took it to auto zone and got a emissions malfunction code. At first the light would come on for a day or two then go out, for a couple of weeks. But its on now and not going back out. My engine has 135K mile and I have had similar problems like this with other trucks and the egr was the culprit.

I number off can be a couple of hundered dollars off in repair parts. If that is the right code no. You have a large leak in the system. Clear code and check gas cap first. No fill up with engine running or leaving the cap lose. 3 clicks will do it. MT

How come the 2002 don't have egr valve's. I guess I'll replace the gas cap and get the code cleared. If that does work I'll try the evap purge valve. |

Re: Dumb question about EGR valve 2002 Silverado
Well it turns out my truck has no EGR valve?? Not sure how GM got away with that. However, I went down to Advanced Auto got the code read again. P0440 emissions malf. I replaced the gas cap and after 300 miles the light went out! Sweet!

Re: Dumb question about EGR valve 2002 Silverado
This forum just saved me a ton of money!
The check engine light has been on in my 2005 Silverado 1500 HD for about 18 months. Consistant diagnosis is "You need an egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. It'll cost about $750.00 to fix". Last time, I was told my truck has 2 of those valves and the code now says they are both bad. So, I was feeling lazy and curious this morning and decided to check it out. Found out the following: 1. EGR valves in Silverados require loosening two bolts and unclipping a wire to remove - something I can do. I even have the tools. 2. Couldn't find the valve for my truck on any GM Parts sites on line. 3. Researched where I would find it in my truck. It was not there. Found this blog that said that some trucks only have a capped off mount - but no valve. 4. Bingo Not Two -- Not even one. Only a capped mount. 5. Researched how to fix latest code. Solution from this blog: Clean and lubricate the gas cap gasket and clean the gas input tube. Grabbed the WD40 and Silicone spray. Cleaned the tube with WD40 and cleaned and lubricated the gasket with silicone. 6. Got in the truck, started it, pulled out of the drive and laughed out loud: NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!!!! 7. Looking for another mechanic. 8. BTW In my truck, a blinking light means engine trouble. A solid light means an emission problem. Check this out on yours! |
