Subaru recalls 200,000 U.S. vehicles second time for brake line fix

Subaru of America is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles in the United States for a second time to fix brake lines that may leak fluid due to corrosion from salty, wintery roads, which could lead to longer stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.
The recall affects 198,900 units of the 2008-2011 model year Impreza, 2008-2014 WRX and STI, and 2009-2013 Forester registered in 21 cold weather states in the northeast, mid-atlantic to as far west as Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.
The recalled Subarus are being called back for the second time after repairs made in a recalls last year for the same problem were found to be inadequate due to incomplete instructions given to dealers, according to a recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
Road salt and water can splash onto the brake lines through a gap in the vehicles’ fuel tank protector, according to the recall notice.
Subaru is expected to begin notifying owners on January 26 and dealers will apply an anti-corrosion wax to the four-way joint connector area of the brake lines on the affected vehicles for free, according to the notice.
Subaru will also fix vehicles outside of the 21-state area affected by the recall upon request, according to NHTSA.
The 21 states are: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin plus the District of Columbia.
