Re: Any Mark VIII's For Sale???
any particular reason you want a 96-98? keep in mind 93-96 are the Gen I's and 97-98 are the Gen II's there seems be be more 97's then 96 or 98's I am assume because the first year for the new look. But if you can find a 98 they came with an updated transmission and you shouldn't have as many problems with them as long as you use Mercon V and a tranny cooler and change the fluid and filter at normal intervals

yea i really like the newest look of the Mark VIII's. is there any particular transmission problems i should watch out for if I was to find any other year Mark VIII besides the 98 year? i mean i love my town car to death but i really don't have any use for something that big any more and I'm looking to downsize. I really think a Mark VIII would be perfect because I have always loved Ford vehicles and a nice two door lincoln would be perfect. |

Re: Any Mark VIII's For Sale???
the pre- 98 transmissions had a 1-2 shift accumulator that was prone to break springs, it is not too difficult to fix but a lot of tranny shops will try to sell you a complete rebuild or may refuse to do what they call "patchwork" alltogether. The 2-3 shift accumulator also tends to go out, but it is far less common. Ford actually came out with updated parts for these so it is possible it has already been done. other things to pay close attension to is the air suspension. around 90-100,000 miles they airsprings ussually start to leak overnight. If you find a car at a car lotI would stop by early one morning before they open, if you see it sitting low you know the airsprings are leaking. Make sure you drive the vehicle over bumps to make sure you do not hear any clunks. If the headlights are HID (some 96's and all 97-98) make sure they work, they are not cheap to replace. $1,000 at the dealer, per side. You can do it yourself for about 200 per side. Make sure the temperature control works, the blend doors tend to go out and get stck on either hot or cold, it is about a 45 dollar part, but a dealer may charge you 500 in labor Another thingyou want to look at is the rear neon light on 97-98's they tend to get water in the tail light and go out, not cheap either. I would suggest going to www.markviii.org and looking around in their technical and FAQ sections, you might also want to brouse the messageboard. If you plan on doing any maintenance youself you will save a lot of many. If you plan on taking it to shops, plan on spending a lot of money. I would not recommend a Mark VIII to anyone that is not mechanically inclined unless they have a lot of disposable cash.
