Did you notice any metal in the pan? Was fluid burnt? Was level ok?

Have you checked for transmission codes?

Another Grand Am bites the dust. Unless there's a problem with your shifter cable, your transmission is done for. This happens a lot in Grand Ams, they weren't exactly built to last.

Mike I have to disagree with you.......the 4T40/45E did not have a lot of problems....

Welcome to AF jomcgruer69 !

How many miles on this GA ??
Did you check and make sure the shift cable is working ?

If thats all good sounds like it'll need a trip to a trans shop. But its likely a shift solenoid is out, which is prob about time being a 99 GA.

You can replace them yourself but its complicated. the whole drivers side axle and stuff needs removed to access them. no fun w/o the right tools.

edit
also these are decent transmission. the problems ive seen is the #1 clutches are way to small compared to the previous trans they used, 4T60/65E(65HD).
They cant handle much HP either, once you get close to 300HP , you start burning up the clutches or breaking trans mounts...or the casing. which luckily Ive not done yet.
