Exclamation '97 Escort Problems...HELP!!!

I posted previously about the TDC positioning on the block of a 2.0 SPI engine, just recently rebuilt the head, resurfaced both the block and the head, reinstalled and reconnected everything in the correct order, almost a picture-perfect installation of everything, and yet once everything was connected, there was power, but the engine wouldn't turn over at all. It was almost as if the engine had locked up or something. You could hear the starter click each time the key was turned over like it was trying to start the engine, but it just seemed as if the engine wouldn't budge. At first we thought that there might not had been enough battery power, so we put it on the charger to see if it would start, and the only thing it did was click over like it was trying to start and if it was held over long enough, it sounded like something was burning. We changed the plug wires with a different set because the conductor inside the number two plug was smashed up pretty bad, and yet still no change. Is there something that I haven't done, or something that needs to be done? I'm so confused, I've put almost over two weeks into this, and I'm very lost. I'm beginning to think that all of my hard work was for nothing. Please, if anyone can help me figure this out, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: '97 Escort Problems...HELP!!!

can you crank the engine over by hand? ie. put a wrench/socket over the crankshaft and rotate the engine? you need to find out if it is seized or not.

is your starter wired in right? check your connections to your battery, make sure they're clean and tight.

Re: '97 Escort Problems...HELP!!!

I couldn't get the engine to crank by hand at first, but I decided to have someone dump some fresh oil into the valve cover while I attempt to turn it, which help a great deal, the engine turned completely, and smoothly, after that, it started right up. Thanks again you guys, I really appreciate all your help.
