Unhappy Paul Mumford Killed

I don't know if this is posted anywhere else in AF, but it certainly hasn't been posted here.

If any of you followed and remember the 2003 Ultimate Street Car Challenge thread, or have read Sport Compact Car's issues with that subject, or have watched Speedvision's coverage of their GT series, then you would have heard of Paul Mumford.

He was the owner/driver of the Viper that dominated all competition in the USCC of a year ago.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPEED GT DRIVER PAUL MUMFORD KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 2, 2003) – Paul Mumford, of Yorba Linda , Calif. , a rookie sensation in the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT Championship, was killed Wednesday afternoon in a private plane crash near the Chino, Calif. airport. He was 31.

1971-2003

In only his second SCCA Speed GT Championship start, Mumford drove to an impressive victory at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Sept. 9. He had previously raced at Road America , where he finished third after starting 22nd. Mumford was working toward running a full season in 2004 in his Dodge Viper Competition Coupe.

“We’ve lost one of our brightest young stars; one whom we’d only just met,” said Steve Johnson, SCCA, Inc. and SCCA Pro Racing President and CEO. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul’s family and friends.”

Mumford was the pilot of his Piper Saratoga plane. He reportedly took off from the Corona Municipal Airport , heading for Oakland , and reported a cockpit fire. He was attempting an emergency landing at Chino when the plane went down into the dry Santa Ana River .

Here's a link to the Viper owner's club where they were planning his funeral, which has been held, as I am late to this news.

I of course never knew him personally, and only knew him by reputation, but I still am saddened by the loss of such a great contributor to the automotive-enthusiast's community. Let's use this thread to wish him well in his new journey, and his family in their time of grief.

I always find it odd how people die some times. Think how dangerous his job is and he ends up dieing in a plan crash

It's very sad indeed, and bad news in the motorsports world has been abundant this week with the death of Tony Renna at Indy.

Tony Renna, for those of you who are un-aware of the IRL world, was a bright young star this year who filled in a few times for Al Unser Jr. during Unser's marital woes. He shone brightly at Indy and was a great contender. When Gil de Ferran announced his retirement from Penske, it set about a huge driver shuffle amidst the top teams, moving former champion Sam Hornish to Penske, fan favorite Tomas Schekter (son of one time World Champion Jody Schekter) to Hornish's seat at Panther Racing, and Tony to Schekter's seat at Target/Chip Ganassi Racing alongside the recovering Kenny Brack.

TCG Racing was amongst the title challenging teams this year, and was looking to be the former Indy Lights racer's chance at true stardom. Regrettably, he was killed during a testing accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway apparently due to catch fencing that failed when his car became airborne in a crash frighteningly similar to the one Mario Andretti had in May during practice.

The IRL is very much considered a part of the American short track scene due to its intense involvement with USAC. The Infiniti Pro Series roster alone reads like a who's who of Silver Crown and Sprint Car racing. It always hurts when a driver is taken.

Godspeed Tony, tell Nolan (Johncock), Kevin (Gobrecht), Randy (Witkum), Vukie (Bill Vukovich), and Jimmy (Shampine) we miss them too.

The only honorable thing to do would be to stuff him in the trunk of his Viper and bury him.

The trunk would be an insult, put him in his driving suit with helmet and strap him into the racing seat and bury him that way...

Trunk?... You sick ... person you.

Well you know what I mean...I just thought it would look creepy seeing the driver through the windows as they lowered the car into the ground.
