p1697 Diagnostic code
My 96 Skylark Custom, V6 3.1L 189cid check engine light recently came on. It was put on a code reader with the following diagnostic read out. "p1697 For evaporative emission control system malfunction." The car is running fine. Anyone have any info on this problem? Is is something that is critical? Thanks. (Something about the gas vapors not being properly captured and released ??)

Re: p1697 Diagnostic code
Something like that could be a faulty gas cap or evap solenoid.
It is not something I would necessarily consider critical, but I would still look into correcting it just to get the CEL off.
