1965 Galaxie engine problems

I have a 1965 Galaxie 500 352hp 4bbl carb auto trans. When accelerating up hills or getting on the accelerator the car sputters, backfires and generally runs bad. It seems to do fine while just rolling along.

I have rebuilt the carb, replaced the brake power booster, replaced the fuel pump, and replaced the fuel filter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I agree with inafogg. Ignition problems will surface when the engine is under a load. I would suggest a bad distributor cap (look for carbon tracks inside). Or it could be bad wires. You can check them at night to see if they are arcing. If it hasn't had points in 12000 miles it is time for them. It's great that you have a 65 Galaxie. No computer or sensors to drive you crazy. Keep that car.

Thanks for the help - i purchased that car in Cabo and drove it to Seattle only replacing a fuel pump. It only has 96,000 miles - it belonged to my buddy's grandmother.

My 16 year old loves it.
Thanks again,
Mike

They make a solid state deal for the distributor so you can get rid of the points if you don't like to change them.

Re: 1965 Galaxie engine problems

When you rebuilt the carburetor did you replace the elastomer valve? Its a small red valve with a stem that sits in where the accelerator pump diaphram on the earlier carbs use to be. This can cause hesitation when stepping on the accelerator. Float level too low? That can cause acceleration problems. Carbon resister wires are known to break down under load, also spark plugs too. Suggest install pertonix ignition to eliminate the points and condensor.
