Disable drivers side airbag?
How can you disable the drivers side airbag in a catera? My mother in law's caters is having some steering column clicking sounds. it is intermittant. a mechanic told her that it was possible that the issue in the steering column would likely cause the airbag to deploy and is wanting to charge her a TON to get it disabled. I'll be going over to visit her in a couple weekends and if I could disable for her to save her some money that would be great. Is it as simple as removing a fuse?

Re: Disable drivers side airbag?
Don't believe the air bag may deploy story, the clicking would normally not be related, get a proper diagnosis. You can find the connector for the air bag usually at the bottom of the steering column, this is not for a dyer to play with.

Re: Disable drivers side airbag?
I used to do all her work for her until my wife and I moved out of town about 5 years ago. . .since then she has found a mechanic, and from the stories she tells I don't know how reliable he is. I'll have her get a second opinion on it.
Thanks. |

Re: Disable drivers side airbag?
Disabling an airbag system is both dangerous for some owners (drivers) and necessary for others. The guidelines set forth by the government will outline who qualifies for this procedure and why it may be necessary. There is much information on the safety concerns and the dangers involved in disabling these systems. Check out these quick movies and website to understand the importance of airbag safety.
http://www.airbagsolutions.com/movie9.aspx If after you watch these videos you still want to disable the safety system on your car, here is the next step for you to take. Get permission to do so from NHTSA through this link… http://www.airbagsolutions.com/resources1.aspx (first section marked ‘Airbag On-Off Switch Request Form”) Once you obtain the permission form, you can legally disable the system. Interrupting the power circuit will render the airbag system inoperative. Most vehicles have a fuse marked ‘SRS’, SIR’, or ‘Airbag’ in the main fuse block. If that is removed, the light will illuminate indicating the system is inoperative and none of the supplemental restraints will deploy if involved in an accident.
