Re: Pinion seal
Quite likely a pinion seal. The question becomes why it failed. If the pinion is tight (has no excessive play) a new seal may be all that is necessary.
If the pinion is loose (has measurable play) a new seal won't solve the problem. The pinion can become loose from bearing wear, a damaged housing, or from heavy load in the reverse direction (compresses the crush sleeve).

Re: Pinion seal
Well it's been like that ever since I bought it 9 years ago and over the years I always ended up checking the gear oil every once I awhile. I'm going to guess there is more going on with it then.
