Redlining with a Redline

It's 2 AM and I'm onmy way home. As I'm driving i see a nice Ion redline. Well since I almost got one of those I decided to race one. So I match the cars speed and inch forward and back to get the redline to race. The redline downshifts and it's on. I drop to 3rd and take of with the redline. It had about 1/2 a car length on me until my boost began to climb. It went to 20 till I got to my redline where it went to 15. By that time I already had 4 cars on it. I shifted to 4th where my boost climbed to 22psi I got pushed back into my seat, I shut down cause I freaked out a bit. When I got to my house I was breathing a bit heavy and laughing at the same time.

What happened was that Lately I have been messing with my boost, and before I had this run in with the redline i turned down my boost and found out the reason I'm boosting more now is because I had the boost turned up too much it was sending me into a soft limp mode and restricting my boost. So apparently to boost better I needed to turn it down a bit.

did I not say I turned it down before I had this race? apparently when I had it before the computer was restricting me and i didn't know, and when I lowered the boost it put it back into healthy parameters and so that's why it went to 22 easily with no hesitation. Before it did seem like my top end was suffering a bit but now it doesn't and it doesnt stay at 22 it spiked there and slowly went down, but after the 22 spike I shut it down cause the force that came from my car suprised me.

Re: Redlining with a Redline

nice race, but i seriously doubt that turbo can hold 22 psi at redline. what boost does it end up at when your redlining?

Re: Redlining with a Redline

The soft limp is probably because of detonation. Which is not surprising at all considering YOU ARE RUNNING 22 PSI. I'm just waiting for you to post that you grenaded your engine. I really doubt setting the boost that high will net you an HP because the turbo is just going to be blowing hot air. You need to do a back to back comparison on a dyno or at least at a 1/4 mile drag strip.

Re: Redlining with a Redline

I've been reading up on Jetta's a little bit and it looks like a lot of people set boost to 17 PSI on stock turbo, so maybe you won't blow anything up at 20. Not for a while at least. That's something I never really understood, how the STI's turbo just pushes hot air above 17.5 PSI, no real benefit in setting boost higher. But SRTs and now Jettas can run 20 PSI on a smaller turbo? Maybe it's because the STI has a 2.5L engine, and you need to flow more air to get the same PSI. SRTs have a 2.3L so it's not that much smaller though...

Do you have a MBC though? If you trick your car into not limping with the diode, it will just spin the turbo as fast as possible unless you limit the boost with a controller somehow. If you don't have a MBC your turbo isn't going to last very long.

I can see this might get ugly, so in preperation of it... lets keep it civil.
