WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
haven't done a WIP up here in a while. I'm using some different methods these days so...thought I'd share.
Pencil-Photoshop That's about it. Here goes. I roughed out some sketches until I landed on one that seemed to want to be a drawing. I use a 5mm zebra tech pencil and this was done in a $5 sketchbook I got at Walgreens. I scanned the sketch and increased the size in photoshop a little then printed it out and put it on my lighttable. I taped a clean piece of paper over it and then I redrew my sketch...a little tighter though. I will repeat this process a least one more time to get to an ok base drawing. In this method I won't be doing any "inking" on lineart other than my pencil drawing. More soon.

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
Actually I wasn't entirely accurate before. I have been doing a little thing I picked up from the great Mark Ervin.
I printed out my scanned and bluelined second sketch and just literally draw over it. I don't know why but it seems to work for me. Now...I'm going to scan it and then print it out then do the clean piece of paper and use the lighttable. I think this goes faster for me.

Here's the pencil base I will render to. The method is much like Don Seegmiller. Get this book: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Charac...don+seegmiller It's been a life changer

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
flat color first
I fill the areas on a new layer, save them as a channel and then merge them into the base layer. I can use the channels to isolate areas later on.

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
Here is the start of the tones. Note this is still under the sketch layer. I didn't understand this part for almost a year, but a week ago I read something in the book I had missed. Key. This rough toning is under the pencil...the finalization stages and detail go on a layer above the pencil. (Changed my life)

By the way, you weren't kidding when you said this forum is dead. It is as if we're the only two people in here saying anything!

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
On quick glance I see, too, that the thread post rate, ie, the creation of new threads by others who are not you, is abysmally infrequent. So we have very few new threads being created and the ones that are created are almost never posted to. It's almost a zombie site. Were it a town you would almost never see a passing car down main street. I wonder if the whole site is this way, not just the sketching and drawing part (?)

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
That's true. But...with 99 views...it's not just you and me.
People are just hiding in the shadows. I know GirlBear is still here..Sketches pops up...I imagine many others are jus lurking. They should post. It won't come back to life if they don't.

I have seen GirlBear, too, but other than her almost nobody else posts save for the occasional 6th grader who has crayon drawings. Once in a while a great artist will post then disappear. I imagine that is just the nature of this section. I once put up stuff as gateways to a website I used to have with my work for sale but the Admin here quickly removed those posts as they were "commercial." That led to why I quit here. I wondered that if an artist cannot promote their work for sale here then what is the point? The point of creating artwork is to be viewed and consumed by a fan base. As charity or "tithing" I always mentored young artists but I eventually saw that as taking up too much of my time so I quit doing that, too. I couldn't tell if my advice was welcomed or resented. In many cases the "pupil" wouldn't respond so I couldn't tell if they hated it or not. I think there are general categories of posters here. You have the gung ho aspiring kid who fantasizes about being a car designer for Ferrari or Lamborghini. You have the occasional "passer through" who is actually a car designer, is above this site, and can draw better than anyone--then they leave. You have the talented "fine artist" (whose work ranges from ok to amazing) who wants people to buy their work but struggles to sell anything whatsoever. And you have the "mentor" type with a day job, you and sometimes myself, who ask for nothing in return but an acknowledgement. If the acknowledgement is lacking then the place tends to feel even more dead and apathetic.

Re: WIP Bay Bus Family Fun
and here's color over the top.
basically make a new layer and paint on it as if it was canvas. I have some tweaks, but I'm gonna drop the characters in and lock it all down.
