Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
What a fantastic job. The weathering on the transmission looks great, and I love the wire wheels. Nice!

It's cool thanks, I'll pop back when I get home. I can hardly look at any pics on the whole site so I'll have to do a catch up!

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Hi Guys, since my last post I’ve spent many hours improving, finishing and test fitting all the remaining parts.
The fuel tanks are done but needed quite a lot of modification to fit. I’ve also made a few new parts along the way including two replacement front wing indicators; the originals were horrible clunky lumps with very thick plating nothing like the beautiful delicate Ferrari items. I’ve made aluminium inner arches for the engine cover, added some frame details and made a removable engine cover support frame which mimics the real thing when in place. At this time I’m working on the doors, or should I say door. The body would be too delicate to remove both resin doors without causing problems during final assembly. As I am intending to do a small diorama I only need to open the driver’s door to show the interior. I took a rubbing of the door surround and swage line on masking tape before I started cutting the body up. The tape was then transferred to a piece of 0.25mm brass and the shape roughly cut the swage line formed across part of the door and the basic curve formed. Anyway, it’s looking fairly good as a starting point and there’s no going back now. Incidentally, if anyone knows where I can find 1/24th scale crash helmet, I’d be pleased to know even if it was only a starting point for me to make my own. Cheers, Lee. |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Just a small update, I've made the hinges & door jamb that fit into the door opening and soldered everything together. The next step will be to glue the jamb into slots I've cut in the opening and start adjusting the door fit and operation. This part has been very fiddly and time consuming but it looks like it may actually work!
Cheers for now, Lee |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Looking good.
the revell cobra kit that came with Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby might work for a open face helmet, any of the first tamiya motorized kits all have a driver figure you could cut the face out of one?.... just some ideas. Paul |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Thanks for the help Paul however I've found a company in the USA, 'Immense miniatures' who do an entire range of driver figures and helmets from various eras so I have just placed an order.
Cheers, Lee. |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Hi Guys, I've fitted the door to the body and checked the alignment was good enough to continue.
The next step was to make the window frame and as I wasn't sure which gauge to use at this time I made three from a three pieces of brass laminated and riveted together using a template made from thin gauge aluminium. Next the frame was temporarily fitted to the door, cut to size and prepared for soldering. Soldered in place and a door surround for the door aperture fitted: Solder cleaned up: And finally for this update I made the 'door box' from the same brass as the door skin; 0.25mm. Next I will adjust the white metal door card that came with the kit to fit my door. Happy Christmas Guys, Lee. |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
The picture of the body with all the holes drilled around the door just makes me shudder. No way I could bring myself to take an expensive kit such as this and start going at it the way you are. The difference: you are truly a modeler, me just a kit builder. Excellent stuff so far, look forward to the next update!

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
Hi Guys,
I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to finish all the parts of the body prior to painting, making sure everything fits so as I don’t need to handle them afterwards other than for assembly. So I’ve removed some material from inside the passenger door to give the illusion of depth to the panel and added the support structure. When the inner panel is fitted it should look fairly convincing. Sorry for the poor quality photos; my camera is knackered! One of the window frames I made previously has been glued into the passenger window opening to create an edge for me to glue the windows inside. This has also had the advantage of giving a crisper finish than the rough resin it replaces and gives both doors the same size frame. I’ve finished making the open door inner panels so they can be sprayed separately and I’ve added a lock assembly. The rear panel has been finished wires added to finish off the detailing and weathered. As this particular car actually doesn’t exist and is going to be in a small diorama I’ve made a Prova plate, just for fun really. Next airbrushing the body, thanks for looking. Cheers, Lee. |

Re: Ferrari 250 LM (Climax/MFH)
thats absolutely magnificent job!
Also a great tutorial for those of us, that would like to try something similar . I have one question: what references do you use for detailing the engine, maybe some books, websites etc? Best regards, Sasho |
