87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
Obviously new to the forums so your help is appreciated. I tried the search function with no luck so I am posting my issue here.
I have an 87 GMC jimmy with a TBI fueled 5.7. recently it started stalling at idle whether in gear or not and wont restart till it sits for about a day. After restart I get about five minutes of idle before process repeats. When it starts to stumble if I press on the gas it stays running, but as soon as I let off it dies and wont restart till I let it sit overnight or use starting fluid. I am hoping its just a fuel filter or something easy, but figuredI would get yalls thoughts first. Thanks for your help. |

Re: 87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
Ya picked up a Fuel filter this morning, once it warms up abit I am gonna go put it on. What I am hoping is that its not debris in the tank clogging the pickup. Of course its got a full 40 gallons in it now so I realy don't want to pull it if I don't have to. Lol.

Re: 87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
Update:
1.Replaced fuel filter, old one was clogged. Truck will now idle until I shut it off, but will not restart unless it sits or I use starting fluid. (before it would idle for about 5 min then die and not restart) 2. As soon as I put it in gear it dies and will not restart without starting fluid or letting it sit for abit; However as soon as it does restart it idles and the engine runs fine. 3. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge, but will get one if yall think that is the NEXT step. |

Re: 87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
hmm i assume no engine codes? a fuel pressure test would be the next logical step, i would think. i had an 88 suburban, and that is what it did when it ran out of gas. (a friend borrowed it and ran it out of gas a few times). so i would assume that a fuel pressure issue is the problem. i'm not sure what the specs rae though. i know autozone will rent you the test gauge. maybe they can tell you the specs as well.

It actually had run out of gas about a day before this issue happened, but after refilling it the truck ran for about 20 miles. Could running it out of fuel messed it up? Air in the line or something? |

Re: 87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
it prob should have caught up by now. of course, running of of gas can damage the fuel pump. especially if it's got some age on it. also, running it out can cause it to suck up any grime in the tank. remember, any of that gunk in the fuel filter had to pass through the pump. maybe a good fuel system cleaner would help...
on my suburban, if it ran empty, i just did some gas in the TB while cranking and it would start up. never had an prolonged issues from it.

Re: 87 jimmy 5.7 stalls restarts after sitting
Running out of fuel or running very low is a fuel pump killer.
Fuel pressure specs are 9-13 lb fuel pressure. Recheck the fuel filter for black stuff or orther stuff. A bad fuel pump will sometimes put black stuff in fuel filter. Best place to test fuel pressure on that one is at the fuel filter gas line fittings. May need a adapter line to tap into filter fuel line. Hook up gauge and check cold start pressure and engine running and or running on the road pressure. You should see 9-13 lbs all the time from cold start to after 30 minutes running on road. Full pressure with return line pinched shouls be around 16-20 lbs pressure. Post back you pressure readings.
