What do you think about street racing?

I feel like this is always a touchy subject to talk about. More often than not, you get individuals who are either for it or against it, with a small percentage of people who are in the middle.

Myself? I'm more in the middle on it. On one hand, it's empowering to individuals who have a small group of friends and hangouts where they can get together, check out each others' cars and go head to head for bragging rights. There's also the thrill of doing something you're not supposed to do (since, you know, it's illegal). After all, who doesn't enjoy that rush you get from breaking the rules in the name of fun?

On the other hand, however, we've seen time and time again the results of what happens when street races go bad. People can die - even people who weren't taking part in the action - or be seriously injured for the sake of seeing who has the faster car.

While I've never been in a situation that I've gotten to a track to race against friends, I know that is a viable alternative for some people.

I suppose if I had to choose one, I'd probably go in favor of street racing, so long as it's done away from high-traffic areas. Lord knows I've been involved in my fair share of street racing adventures (like with -Josh- doing 130 down the highway in a classic Z28 camaro? Yeah, that was fun).

What do you guys think?

I do it because it's a rush, although i must say i wouldn't do it nearly as often if they would put a quarter mile track in champaign somewhere.

Re: What do you think about street racing?

oh geez....Josh is poster child for why there shouldn't be street racing

I am a true hypocrite. I don't like to hear about it as I've heard some lame stories that were so lucky to not end in true horror story. However, I have a horrible habbit of growing devil ears when behind the wheel of certain cars. I know I'm not an idiot driver though. thats where the double standard lies. So I probably should keep my big mouth shut & stick to the track where everybody belongs.

Since I have been a parent, it is easier for me to remind myself not to be a hypocrite. Just because one has exercised skill...it doesn't always make for the proper example.

Re: What do you think about street racing?

Personally I am for it AS LONG as its out in the middle of no where, no traffic, no houses, ect. Then you can do it basically at your own risk. Anywhere else like in broad day light in traffic its just stupid.

Re: What do you think about street racing?

Make tracks more accessible. Make road courses and track days cheaper. Don't charge $300+ just for an "HPDE" where there is no racing. Don't make me drive an hour and a half to the nearest 1/8th track or two hours for the nearest 1/4 track. Make more of the days the track is open "all welcome" or "test and tune" days. Make going to the track fun again. Let people do roll races through the lights. Stop treating the Sunday autocross like its a damned FIA race, and let people just go out, thrash the cars on the course, and have fun.

If you want to cut down on street racing, stop trying to enforce it out of the culture, and instead offer a true, legitimate, affordable counter offering that is open to everyone and less regulated to simulate the street racing atmosphere without the inherit danger associated with racing in a public venue.

The biggest change needs to be with the public perception. People who race, legally or otherwise, are often seen as a sort of outside culture. To the masses, we are ignorant, mouth breathing rednecks or stupid ass kids with a death wish. Until the perception of the racer changes to someone who simply enjoys driving in competition, no moves will be made by those with the ability to do so to make legal track access easier on us. In fact, I'd be willing to bet the "masses" as such would be glad to see legal tracks torn down as well and all of us forced into Toyandason Camcordimas speed limited to 55.

Back into my hole I go.

Re: What do you think about street racing?

I used to do it... but I grew out of it I guess. Nobody around here really does it, I know of a place where people meet up one town over, but never gone to check it out.

I do all my hijinks now at the track, autox and trackdays mostly. Can't really do much road racing on the street.

I suppose if I didn't live in city full of cops, I'd probably be more willing to screw around on the street.

Plus, street racers cheat... lol. There's never a set distance it seems to race. It's just whoever can get ahead first wins. Well, Ok... but in a real drag race you might get ahead out of the hole but on the big end I may pass you. Street racers tend to shut down once they see that you're pulling on them like a raped date. Always hated that.

Re: What do you think about street racing?

I got tired of all of the Lamo street racers crusing the streets looking to rev their engines at everything that combusts. Maybe someday if the old days come back again I will entertain the thought. I think that's pretty unlikely given the number of Toyota Prius I see on any given day.
