Car starts and then turns off or jerks while driving

I have 2002 Nissan xterra and tonight the car started for 2-5 seconds and then turned off. After giving it some gas the car stayed on but jerked when I reached while driving. The check engine light came on and stayed on. I live in Colorado and it is pretty cold tonight so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Any ideas would be appreciated.
